I have over twenty two years of experience in all areas of intellectual property law, with particular emphasis on patent litigation, client counseling, and patent prosecution in the areas of biochemistry, pharmaceuticals, and molecular diagnostics. This has included the representation of pharmaceuticals and biotech companies, both large and small, as well as several universities and research institutions. My litigation experience spans a diverse range of technologies (from crystal polymorphs to lithium batteries), although I have concentrated in litigation involving pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. This experience has included both jury and bench trials in federal district court, as well as advocacy in private arbitration proceedings.My technical background has been invaluable in representing my biotech and pharmaceutical clients in intellectual property matters before the Patent Office and in Federal Court. In addition, I am particularly well versed in the specific needs of pharmaceutical innovator clients in Hatch-Waxman litigations, as well as those clients looking at biosimilar competition. Moreover, I have considerable experience counseling clients on, and participating in, post-issuance proceedings at the Patent Office. This includes an ex parte reexamination for a transcription-factor-related patent that resulted in the cancellation of all claims asserted in Federal patent infringement litigation.I am also a frequent speaker and author on a variety of intellectual property law topics. I was an author and regular contributor to the Patent Docs weblog, where I wrote extensively on issues specific to the AIA-related PTAB trials, the pending legislation to curb abusive patent litigation, ethical issues related to patent practice, and issues specific to the litigation of pharmaceutical patents. A highlight was a 2013 interview for a segment that aired on the NPR program “All Things Considered” that addressed legislative efforts to address the so-called “patent troll” problem.
