As a postdoctoral researcher at Utrecht University, I lead the development of a hybrid mass-spectrometer, combining a commercial high-resolution Orbitrap mass-analyzer with a pulsed UV laser system for efficient fragmentation and analysis of very large molecular ions; My work included:- CAD-design of vacuum components- Electronics design for control units- Set up of the optical system - Software development for data analysis - Optimization, validation and method development for the new instrumentResponsibilities: - Coordination of R&D collaborations with leading international and Dutch instrument manufacturers (Thermo Fisher Scientific, MSVision)- Scientific communication: presenting at international conferences, publishing articles in peer-reviewed journals- Organization of a weekly seminar series- Coordination of the “UV laser” sub-team, supervision of a PhD student

Title: Molecular recognition in gas phase: theoretical and experimental study of non-covalent protein-ligand complexes by mass-spectrometry; The work included experimentation, numerical modelling and computer simulations of the inter-molecular interactions within complex protein assemblies, as well as method development for the emerging field of native mass-spectrometry. I also took part in setting up the equipment and establishing the running routines and protocols for the new mass-spectrometry facility.

During five very productive months that I spent as a visiting scientist at the Weizmann Institute of Science I developed a new combined computational and experimental approach to study the protein-ligand interactions and structural changes in large macromolecular complexes. This work eventually lead to a publication in PNAS.
