IWG Azure Migration ProjectInternational Workspace Group (IWG) is a company with over 2.5 million global users at 3,300 locations in more than 1,000 towns in 110 different countries with 10,000 team members accessing the same data centre services – at the same time.• When it came to data center migration, Microsoft’s best practice and proven methodology was implemented for Azure cloud migration: Discover, Migrate, Optimize.• In the Discover Phase, a Cloud Readiness Assessment was conducted to inventory and benchmark IWG’s on-premise servers and application workloads.• In the Migrate Phase, the migration was planned by conducting detailed architectural design sessions. Where possible, application workloads were redeployed to PaaS services.• To reduce operation expenses and increase the scalability and reliability of their data center, IWG’s 176 VMs, and their application workloads, were migrated from on-premise to Azure. Some of the services in the solution included Azure AD (Active Directory), Azure Backup, ASR (Azure Site Recovery), Azure Recovery Vault, Azure Monitor, Azure Advisor, Azure Virtual Machines, Storage, and a host of Azure PaaS.• In the Optimize Phase, the Virtual Machines/workloads in Azure is being monitored extensively. The fine-tuned environment, provided cost efficiencies, increased availability (reliability) and scale. Risk was reduced by deploying the various applications to highly available configurations in Azure. A full DR fail-over configuration was implemented to a separate geographic Azure data center by ensuring fully automated infrastructure-as-code and pipeline deployments of the software code using well established DevOps principles and features in Azure.
