Profile bio

About Andy Barnes

I began my career writing mathematical modelling code in the fields of plasma physics and superconducting NMR magnets, before discovering my love for embedded device programming. My expertise is in signal processing, motor control, automation, and solar PV (including storage), although I relish most technical tasks. I can both develop products from the ground up (from writing low level bootcode and drivers up to and including sustaining the final product), or simulate and write high level algorithms to control an existing product. I'm very creative and don't like to give up on difficult problems - holding numerous patents for my solutions. I like to write code that is only as complex as it needs to be.I strive to write maintainable, reliable, safe firmware. For example, I have safety certified code currently executing in over 15 million solar inverters which have a 25yr warranty.

Listed skills include Embedded Systems, Firmware, Embedded Software, Engineering, and 28 others.

Staff Firmware Engineer

Current

Austin, Texas, Us

Feb 2020 - Present

Principal Software Engineer

Qt Ultrasound Llc

I was using a 6-axis robot for calibration of the ultrasound scanner. Python was used to read acquisition data and control the robot around the volume using a custom GUI.

Jul 2018 - Dec 2019

Firmware Manager

Fremont, California, Us

I started out being one of two firmware developers developing the firmware for the microinverters. This involved development of the maximum power point tracking algorithm, debugging and writing firmware to work-around field issues (saving the company potentially millions of dollars), development of new advanced grid features and also battery storage algorithms, to name a few.For the last two years I have been the manager of the firmware and QA team which develops all the firmware on the microinverters, in addition to my developer role. We are responsible for the development of new microinverter firmware and the maintenance of over 10 million microinverters currently deployed in the field. I led the effort to obtain UL1998 safety certification for the microinverter code, which we achieved at our first attempt. In addition I have developed several novel algorithms to help improve performance, improve reliability and meet new grid standards for multiple countries all while enabling the company to reduce the cost of each successive inverter generation. I have obtained several patents for numerous algorithms I developed.

Jun 2009 - Jul 2018

Senior Firmware Engineer

Cleveland, Oh, Us

I was employed as a senior engineer writing embedded software for a family of brushless DC servo motor drives. I was solely responsible for the drive firmware. This involved all aspects of the drive software from the command parser to the commutation and servo control. Matlab and Simulink were used to develop the control algorithms on the drive in order to prove new control algorithms and features.I developed and maintained the firmware for multiple drives, including for electric vehicles (for example a commercial BLDC motor powered electric scooter), with various processors and operating systems. This often involved creating novel algorithms to workaround hardware limitations, make the customer’s life easier and be cost effective compared to the competition. For example I developed algorithms for sensorless control, dual motor control, automatic inertia detection, auto-tuning, inertial damping, and absolute encoder support, along with many custom products. The firmware was written following a full product life-cycle from initial specifications obtained from marketing requirements through to design review and prototyping to final testing and product release.

May 2001 - Jun 2009

Senior Software Engineer

Minden, Nevada, Us

I was employed as a senior engineer writing embedded software code for a new portable data collector which collected and processed vibration data from rotating machinery. The DSP used was a fixed-point Analog Devices 21xx processor. I was solely responsible for the signal processing aspect of the data collector. This involved most aspects of signal processing theory including decimation, FFTs, FIR filters, IIR filters, complex frequency shifting etc. I was also involved in the hardware design of the DSP interfaces, helping the hardware engineers integrate the DSP with its peripherals and the microprocessor. This included interfacing to Dual Delta Sigma A/D converters, a serial EEPROM, external RAM (which is also interfaced to the microprocessor), 8-bit A/D converters, a D/A converter and other I/O lines and interrupt lines for configuring signal paths and receiving trigger pulses.
