Sceye is a startup that is developing lighter-than-air (LTA) High Altitude Platform Stations (HAPS) for humanitarian missions and providing broadband access to under-served areas.This was a C-suite role that combined the responsibilities of Chief Engineer and VP of Engineering. I led a team of 25 engineers and technicians in the design and fabrication of Sceye's flight test vehicles. During a six month span, we successfully executed the first two stratospheric test flights in the company's history, including an industry-first demonstration of 3D cellular beam forming from over 60,000 feet.www.sceye.com

Exosonic is a startup that is developing supersonic aircraft with a reduced sonic boom for over-land flight.I led the conceptual design of the propulsion system, including thermodynamic cycle analysis and shaping of the supersonic inlet. www.exosonic.com

Primarily responsible for building a global network of strategic partners and suppliers to help bring Boom's Mach 2.2, 55-seat supersonic airliner to market.Successfully arranged and conducted meetings with senior aerospace executives from over 30 companies at the Farnborough and Paris Air Shows.Developed a compelling business case to help partners and suppliers understand why they should work with Boom.Coordinated and oversaw conceptual design studies with major propulsion system providers.Authored internal strategy documents and presented to the CEO.Managed the supply chain team responsible for building the XB-1 supersonic demonstrator.

First employee at Boom Technology, a Colorado-based startup working on making affordable supersonic air travel a reality.Responsible for developing propulsion solutions for our XB-1 demonstrator and the full scale production aircraft.Tactical responsibilities have included:-Creation of NPSS engine cycle models for existing turbojet engines and the vision turbofan design.-Defining the overall architecture for the variable inlet and exhaust nozzles.-Review and interpretation of CFD analyses.-Leading a team of propulsion designers and analysts.-Interim lead of the Aerodynamics team.Strategic responsibilities have included:-Developing relationships with potential future aircraft engine OEM partners.-Briefing airline customers, investors, and venture capitalists on the technical aspects of supersonic propulsion.-Representing Boom on the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) working groups for aircraft noise and emissions.-Educating congressional staffers on the importance of civil supersonic air travel.-Participation in Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) discussions on supersonics.-Significant involvement in the hiring and recruiting process.

Overall engineering responsibility for the fan and compressor module for the F135 engine, powering all three variants of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter aircraft. Responsible for fleet safety, part retrofits, and production support of new engines. Managed an annual budget of over $15M and directed the work scope of over 120 engineers, including direct supervisory responsibility for 11 employees.

Overall engineering responsibility for the fan and compressor modules of over 10,000 fielded jet engines, powering the Airbus A320/A330/A380 and the Boeing 747/757/767/777, as well as the C-17 military transport. Responsible for fleet safety, part retrofits, and production support of new engines. Managed an annual budget of over $13M and directed the work scope of over 60 engineers, including direct supervisory responsibility for 13 employees.

Development assignment to gain hardware experience. Responsible for production and field support of bearings, seals, gearbox, and oil pump for the F119 engine, which powers the F-22 Raptor fighter aircraft. Managed schedule and budget.

Responsibilities include ensuring on-schedule and on-cost maturation of technologies for launched Geared Turbofan (GTF) engine programs, defining technology roadmaps for next generation GTF engines, and developing offensive and defensive intellectual property strategies.

Served as the study lead for multiple unclassified and classified programs, and supported several proposal activities. Developed a detailed package of propulsion system options for the UCLASS program, in response to a customer RFI. Acted as deputy chief engineer and day-to-day technical lead for the preliminary design of an advanced exhaust system. Coordinated limited engineering resources to meet a wide range of Program Office commitments.

ITAPS was a multi-divisional UTC initiative to achieve significant aircraft level benefits through the integration of the engine, inlet, exhaust, electrical power system, and other aircraft subsystems (such as ECS). Responsibilities included development of requirements for United Technologies Research Center ITAPS studies, support of marketing presentations to government and airframe customers, evaluation of potential thermal and power management technologies, and assessment of competitor technologies.

Responsibilities included integrated analysis of F135 and F-35 thermal management systems, TMS configuration definition, running a weekly internal IPT meeting, and coordinating a joint Tiger Team with participation from Pratt & Whitney, Lockheed Martin, government customers, Hamilton Sundstrand, and Rolls Royce. Major accomplishment was executing a key specification change request related to propulsion system heat rejection.
