Following a degree in Social Sciences from Middlesex University I began a career in local government town planning. I worked in Barking and Dagenham, Enfield north London and now in Chelmsford Essex. I’ve always enjoyed the varied mix that comes with local government planning and over the years added urban design and project management to my initial forays into development control. I have three main activities:- 1. Running a group of specialists in heritage, public realm projects, masterplanning and urban design in the Implementation part of the Economic Development and Implementation Team.2. Beaulieu and Channels are the City Council’s main Local Plan allocations comprising some 3600 new homes schools, neighbourhood centre, and railway station. I am the Council’s lead advisor on urban design and masterplanning. This role continues into the next Local Plan and strategic growth sites. 3. I am the local planning authority’s principal advisor on planning and flood risk. To support the Local Plan I led the commissions on technical studies for the Strategic Flood Risk Assessments and Water Cycle Studies. These were completed in 2018. My flood risk work also includes the Chelmsford Flood Alleviation Scheme, which when completed will safeguard over 1200 homes and businesses. And during 2012-2014 I was the Chelmsford Project Manager for Floodcom which was a European Union project with partners from Essex County Council, Chelmsford, Antwerp Belgium, Breda The Netherlands and St Omer France. Its purpose was to raise awareness of flood risk to those communities in danger and to help fund practical solutions.
