I teach Legal Ethics and Professional Responsibility, English Legal System, Legal Method and Legal Skills. My research interests include the legal profession and legal education. With Professor Jenny Levin I wrote the first academic book on the ethics of the legal professions, The Ethics and Conduct of Lawyers in England and Wales. I convene the Legal Ethics Forum of the Centre for Legal Professional Practice at City University London. I am a director in the International Association of Legal Ethics, sharing organisation of the sixth annual conference in July 2014.An active member of the Socio-Legal Studies Association, I chair the Legal Ethics and Professions stream at the Annual Conference. While Chairman of the Ethics sub-committee, I drafted the Association's Research Ethics Code of Conduct.I have held numerous roles for the legal professions, including as a judge in The Law Society Annual Pro Bono Awards. As a member of the Law Society’s Training Framework Review Group (2002-2008), I helped to produce the 'Day One Outcomes' for solicitors. As education and training consultant to the Bar of England and Wales between 1995 and 2005 I conducted inspections of Bar training courses. I led inspections between 2005 and 2008 as Chairman of the Bar Vocational Course Board. I was a member of the Bar Education and Training Committee from 1995 to 2012, latterly as Vice-Chair. Recent consultancies include a report for The Law Society on an undergraduate Legal Ethics curriculum and for the Solicitors Regulation Authority on continuing professional development.
