Between May 23 and July 29, 2022, I interned for the Navy Museums Division(NMD) within Naval History and Hertiage Command(NHHC) providing 257 hours at the equivalent of a GS-9(entry level) position providing $7,453 of value to the US Navy and the American taxpayer. I wrote and submitted weekly reports covering different aspects of the National Museum of the US Navy(NMUSN) including, the museum's ethos and purpose, research, outreach, safety, marketing, artifact conservation, education, exhibit creation, and graphic design, financial challenges, and the legal issues related to collections and conservations. My weekly reports and deep dive project received extremely positive feedback from senior leadership within the division, especially in the fields of collections management and visioning/benchmark for a new museum and associated exhibits parts of deep dive project. I used graduate school level textbooks, the Navy Department Library and all other available assets for weekly reports and deep dive research project on the Perry Expedition. My Perry Expedition project consisted of an in-depth research paper discussing the historical context, the expedition's goals, Commodore Perry's actions to open Japan, the consequences, both intended and unintended, and its historical relevance today. The project also consisted of an exhibit theme and script, potential artifacts and artifact labels, maps of the squadron's route to Japan, and potential issues with a Perry Expedition exhibit, such as was the opening of Japan legal. The project primarily focused on highlighting Commodore Perry's story, as opposed to highlighting artifacts, to reflect future NMUSN exhibits. I attended all levels of executive leadership meetings for NHHC and bi-weekly NMD meetings with the ten other Navy museums focused on hiring and current museum activities and operations. I gained an in-depth understanding of the current day to day operations, including personnel management and leadership and financial planning, of the National Museum of the US Navy(NMUSN) as well as the history and future of the museum, and the qualities the American Alliance of Museums requires for accreditation.
