Profile bio

About Andy Buelow

I have worked in the symphony orchestra industry for more than 30 years, first in sales and marketing, later in public affairs, and for the past 12 years as an executive director. At the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra I directed the publicity campaigns for, among other activities, the launch of Music Director Andreas Delfs in 1997 and the orchestra's 1999 Cuba Millenium Tour. From summer of 2001 through fall of 2007 I served as executive director of the Traverse Symphony Orchestra in Traverse City, Michigan. There I worked in partnership with their new music director, Kevin Rhodes, reshaping this community orchestra into a fine regional professional orchestra. The Traverse Symphony Orchestra became the premier ensemble of the northern half of Michigan, attracting musicians from all over the state. When former League of American Orchestras president Henry Fogel heard the group, he pronounced it "the best orchestra I have ever encountered in a community of this size."I moved to Tacoma in 2007 to take a similar position with the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra, working with its longstanding and beloved music director Harvey Felder. My work here has been rewarding and challenging. It coincided with the severe economic recession of 2008-2011. In addition, changes in lifestyle for adult Americans have moved many away from regular participation in live events of all kinds, from arts to sports to movies. I strongly believe in the value of live concert attendance, however, and have been working ever since to transform our board into passionate, effective ambassadors and rainmakers, as well as to make Tacoma Symphony Orchestra concerts compelling, must-see events. Specialties: Branding and publicity, public affairs, strategic planning, not-for-profit finance planning, fund development.

Listed skills include Orchestral Music, Music, Fundraising, Choral, and 23 others.
