Andy is an MBE, an Individual Merit Research Scientist into CCS at the British Geological Survey and honorary professor at the University of Edinburgh. He has a long history of relevant research in many European and UK CO2 storage projects (e.g. SACS/SACS2, CO2STORE, CASTOR, Co2ReMoVe, CO2CARE, SiteChar, ECO2, ULTimateCO2, BIGCCS, CO2GeoNet) and a number of UK government and industrially-funded ones (e.g. DiSECCS, UKCCSRC, UKCCSRC2017). His main expertise lies in site characterisation and performance assessment and site monitoring with current research interests including dynamic storage capacity assessments and the development of effective site monitoring methodologies. He has in-depth knowledge of seismic techniques his particular scientific interests lie in quantitative analysis of time-lapse seismic data to characterise CO2 plumes, and, coupled with flow simulations, to track and understand CO2 migration in reservoirs. He has reviewed technical monitoring aspects of the Otway Basin and the Gorgon storage projects, on behalf of the Australian authorities and the IEAGHG Programme. He has worked as an assessor on the UK government CCS Competition and has advised on the EU CCS Directive and the UK government Consultation Document on CO2 storage. Andy was also on the international Expert Panel Advising the Government of Alberta on their CCS Regulatory Framework Assessment. Andy has published over 100 scientific papers on a wide range of geosciences topics including over 50 on CO2 storage, including site characterisation, storage capacity assessment, time-lapse seismic analysis, reservoir flow simulation, site monitoring strategies and regulatory issues. He was also central to the development of the web-based monitoring decision support tool for the IEAGHG Programme.
