LCDR Wei-Ming Chiu, who also goes by Andy, is currently working as an Operations Officer at R.O.C. (Taiwan) Navy Headquarters, Ministry of National Defense. The following biography describes LCDR Chiu’s family, academic background, and career.After finishing elementary school in Pingtung County, LCDR Chiu also wanted to join the military to protect his country. Therefore, he began studying at the Chung Cheng Armed Forces Preparatory School. LCDR Chiu graduated from junior high school in June 2005 and high school in July 2008. Following secondary school in August 2008, LCDR Chiu begin attending the R.O.C. Naval Academy, pursuing a major in Marine Science. In 2009, he was chosen as one of three students to attend a military college in the United States. As a result, LCDR Chiu had the opportunity to attend The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, where he earned a B.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering with an Applied Mathematics minor.During his time as a university student at The Citadel, LCDR Chiu won 2012 the Star of the West Summer Scholarship, which provided him the chance to travel to Sydney, Cairns, and Canberra, Australia, in order to study sustainable engineering. Also, during his tenure at The Citadel, LCDR Chiu passed the national Fundamentals of Engineering Exam in the field of Civil and Environmental Engineering. LCDR Chiu is also currently an Engineer in Training (EIT) in the U.S. states of Texas and Ohio. After he graduated from The Citadel, LCDR Chiu was commissioned as an Ensign in the R.O.C.(Taiwan) Navy.In 2018, LCDR Chiu took advantage of an opportunity to work on his master’s degree at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in Monterey, CA. After two years of academic training and two field experiments at the Pearl Harbor Navy Base in partnership with the U.S. Navy, LCDR Chiu graduated from NPS in 2020 with a Master of Science, double majoring in both Physical Oceanography and Engineering Acoustics.LCDR Chiu has been serving his country since 10 May 2013. He has been designated to four different types of naval vessels (Cheng-Kung Class Frigate, Ching-Chiang Class Patrol Ship, Yung-Feng Class Minesweeper, and Kee-Lung Class Destroyer), and he has contributed his time and energy patrolling and defending the Taiwan territorial seas more than four years. In addition, LCDR Chiu completed training with the submarine force and passed Navy diver training from the Underwater Operation Unit (U.O.U.). He currently is a certified PADI rescue diver.
