Bringing extensive experience of designing, building and running Network and IT platforms and Services into the Security Organisation to create practical and effective Security Tools, Policies and Solutions. Ensuring that our Security processes both improve the Organisation's Security posture AND work effectively for the Operational teams who need to implement and - most importantly - who must own them.Specifically responsible for BT's implementation and compliance with PSTI regulations.

Continued with full operational responsibility for all aspects of BT's public Wi-Fi service. Designed, championed across the organisation, and drove through to implementation, EE's Wi-Fi Coverage Boost service. This uses the public Wi-Fi estate to improve customer's indoor mobile experience where cellular coverage is poor, doing so at minimal incremental cost to the business. Continued to drive outstanding Wi-Fi service while carefully managing costs. Drove migration of appropriate IT components off-site into public cloud reducing costs and improving supportability. Drove early adoption of automated pipelined development and test. Took responsibility for all technical aspects of BT's emerging IoT services - both Network and IT based. Drove the successful launch of NB IoT at a Network level and successful trials of LoRaWAN. Industrialised the technology and operations behind our key platforms to better deliver to our customers' expectations, Developed and ran a successful in-house software platform to flexibly create a wide variety of customised IoT services focussed on addressing customers business problems, rather than delivering a set of vanilla IoT services. Worked closely with end-customers to build a wide variety of trials and live services.

This was a senior role with full design and, a little later, operational responsibility for all BT's mobile and wireless networks and many associated IT systems prior to the acquisition of EE. A central element of this role was as part of a tight management team running all of BT's IP based networks, and - on a rota basis - being the on-call Senior Manager responsible for all Serious Incidents. This provided me with invaluable experience in operating at the most senior levels in the most pressured environments. Public Wi-Fi continued to be a key element of the day job, and during this period I led for our organisation on the in-sourcing of software development and network operations from a 3rd party, back into BT. During a three year period, I transformed BT Wi-Fi, improving service availability by a factor of more than 20, minimised capital expenditure through careful optimization and simplification, while supporting a 3-fold growth in traffic and reducing the team size by 50%. During this time I was also Technical Authority for the Wi-Fi for the London 2012 Olympic Games and in addition to the back-office Wi-Fi, led the team to deliver stadium Wi-Fi to all key venues in the Olympic Park.During this period, BT acquired mobile spectrum, and began to deliver on a new mobile strategy based on Femtocells. I led the team accountable for building the core network, SIM cards, OTA systems, mobile device testing and 4G macro network build. I recruited key individuals at pace, and turned up a working mobile core with devices within 9 weeks.Following BT's acquisition of EE, in addition to the ongoing responsibility for wireless, I gained design and operational responsibility for our platforms providing Retail broadband services and for creating a new large scale NFVI based service for our Global business.

Working in a start-up type environment of c. 50 people inside BT as part of a vertically integrated Wireless Broadband team. I was responsible for all technical design aspects (Network and IT) of BT's Wireless Broadband services - in particular the public Wi-Fi service. Drove that network to scale 100x over this period and moved it to become a profitable enterprise. Received the BT Gold Medal for Innovation for developing the Open WI-Fi concept where each of our broadband hubs would also be a public Wi-Fi hotspot. This made BT Wi-Fi one of the largest Wi-Fi networks in the world and established public Wi-Fi as a key USP in BT's broadband business.

This was a move into our Group CTO office at a the time when BT was undertaking a fundamental review of it's strategy - looking forward to an all IP world - the creation of the 21st Century Network (21CN) - the network which still powers BT today. My role was to create the Mobile strategy (without a mobile operator since we had demerged BT Cellnet / O2) some years previously. After looking carefully at key markets, vendors and operators worldwide, I developed a standards based strategy for a Converged Fixed and Mobile Network. It provided for seamless mobility between fixed, wireless and mobile networks, and a common IMS based service layer providing voice and multi-media services for both fixed and mobile networks, including emulation of the PSTN. This established the direction and key technologies in use in today's networks.

During this period of time, BT was looking to sell-off its technology organisation. I was one of a small team of leading technologists who were directed to establish an externally facing Technology Consultancy organisation. I worked for a number of external clients in this time in the Mobile and Government space, in the UK and overseas. One example was helping a Mobile client to critically and independently appraise the performance of their network, and to identify a new method of segmenting the market allow them to set and track a much more meaningful set of KPIs. This assignment also gave me very direct exposure to a sales-led organisation.

Led a team which provided BT's Joint Venture with AT&T - 'Concert' - with Access Network strategy and the Network Design for the then, cutting-edge, ATM service.

Led a team supporting BT in Access Network Technologies and the associated Techo-Economic analysis which played a key part in setting the Access Network strategy in the UK and for BT's drive into overseas markets. Personally focussed on providing the Overseas ventures with support on Wireless Access Networks.

Leading a team examining the cost, technical and strategic options for delivering country wide fibre based broadband networks. Creating the strategy and economic framework for the rollout of Passive Optical Networks long before the UK was politically ready to take them up. So many of the fundamentals established in this work still apply to this day.

Designing Cost Optimised Broadcast Video Codecs and Electronics (including Optical) for Broadband Passive Optical Networks
