Following the acquisition of Scripps Networks by Discovery, I oversaw the integration of multiple public cloud and DevOps tool sets, such as Terraform vs. CloudFormation, Chef vs. Ansible, and AWS ECS vs. Kubernetes.

I managed the staff responsible for the Scripps Networks ad sales and affiliate sales systems. These mission-critical systems accounted for more than 2.5 billion dollars in 2014.My management asked me to transform a team of legacy systems engineers and open positions into a cloud engineering team. I led training for staff on topics such as DevOps, cloud concepts, AWS services, and Chef configuration management. I also hired staff with development experience and systems knowledge. Before long, I had built a team of eight capable of handling any cloud task. The number of AWS certifications in the group grew from two to fourteen.Together, we redesigned our Jenkins architecture. We had a centralized Jenkins EC2 server which many internal groups used. Maintenance took weeks to communicate and schedule, and plugins often conflicted. We designed a new Jenkins 2 architecture using Docker containers on AWS ECS clusters. We then built an environment for each group. This improvement allowed for immediate, on-demand maintenance, instead of waiting weeks.We rebuilt the automation around our websites. Adobe Experience Manager is not a cloud-native application. Building new environments for developers took over two hours. Working with developer teams, and using a combination of Jenkins, Chef, CloudFormation, and Python, we decreased the time to create new environments to twenty minutes. This improvement saved almost $100,000 a year in developer time. We also built tools for support staff to conduct complicated patching and maintenance processes.Team members were often embedded with developer teams as DevOps engineers. They provided expert help on complicated projects. They led creating automation for ECS clusters, application deployment automation, and creating and managing serverless microservices using AWS Lambda.

As the senior networking architect and engineer, led the design and installation of two new data center network architectures.Transitioned in 2012 to cross-functional Converged Infrastructure team, overseeing a large VMware environment. The role has further moved into cloud and automation technologies-- I have championed using chef to automate our infrastructure, created Amazon Web Services architectures, and installed a substantial OpenStack proof of concept on site.

Grew a small data center with a single DS-3 Internet connection into multiple large data centers with multiple high capacity Internet connections hosting some of the largest web destinations on the Internet, such as HGTV.com and dilbert.com.

Under the CTO of DURO, I was directly responsible for the Linux and Solaris server administration of an ISP encompassing over 300,000 users through the Southeastern United States. I also served in an advisory role for all other technical aspects. I supervised a staff of 5-7 other systems administrators.

ICX Online was a startup ISP with 300 dialup users when I joined. I served as the primary technical employee in an all-encompassing technical role as ICX grew to over 3,000 users, and was acquired by regional ISP DURO Communications.
