I'm a passionate medical researcher and educator. My overarching professional goals are to make basic science discoveries that drive clinical advancements in patient care and to train the next generation of caring clinicians. I'm a classically trained clinical anatomist and neuroanatomist as well as a dedicated researcher and entrepreneur. At the University of South Florida, I teach medical students and other health professions students clinically-oriented anatomy with an emphasis on neuroanatomy. I keep the structures relevant to practice and help students achieve maximal efficiency and efficacy as they learn this challenging topic. My lab is focused on investigating the fascicular anatomy of peripheral nerves to improve electroceuticals, evaluating novel approaches to teaching health professions students, and characterizing normal anatomical variants in cadavers. At Karamedica, I am leading our team in developing novel clinical uses for chitosan, an amazing biopolymer that is found in exoskeletons of crustaceans and insects. Our development pipeline includes products for stopping life-threatening hemorrhage, treating Alzheimer's disease and cerebral amyloid angiopathy, delivering genes to the brain via the nose, and treating cancer with locally-delivered immunotherapies.
