In my early career, I built wonderful teams and worked with remarkable individuals. We ran some of the most profitable hospitality businesses in the country. Hours were long, but we were in it together and morale was high. My team turnover across multiple businesses was always low. That was my priority KPI. Understand the team, treat them well and motivate them, and everything else will follow. There were still times when experience wasn’t enough. One morning a team member asked for a word. They told me about a recent suicide attempt and their plans to try again that night. I did everything that I could do that day to help them. However I realised my understanding was inadequate to offer the kind of help that was needed. It was time to build that understanding, so I pursued a second degree, this time in Psychology. Having completed the degree, I realise that none of us have more than a passing understanding of what happens in our brains. I plan to spend the rest of my life improving that understanding.A few decades of business and people management under my belt have allowed me to navigate the domains of organisational psychology, personnel empowerment, and the broad spectrum of business management. These experiences have reinforced my understanding of what I enjoy: bringing out the best in people and acquiring new knowledge.I firmly believe that when harmonised effectively, groups can achieve unparalleled levels of creativity and productivity. I am currently working at FCLabs to build such a group. Understanding the human mind is a grand endeavour, and we are only just getting started. If you want to know more about our startup: andy@fclabs.co.uk or visit us at fclabs.co.uk
