Responsible for driving Fibercore into new markets and aggressively diversifying the customer base through technological and commercial developments, managing sub-sections of the global sales/support team and developing marketing material.The technology development aspect of the role has typically taken two forms, driving the development of existing capabilities or building strategic supply routes for offering new technologies beyond Fibercore’s in-house capabilities. The role requires significant cross-functional internal interaction with engineering, sales and marketing as well as external commercial interactions to secure access and exclusive rights to exploit third party products and technologies. Newly commercialized products have included space grade amplifier fibres, pre-assembled gain blocks for CATV and LiDAR systems, fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs), fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) coils and disposable sensing products for the medical industry. The outcomes from this role have built the vanguard for Fibercore’s future growth plans over the next 5+ years. The role requires me to be the product line manager for much of the Fibercore portfolio, responsible for the evolution of the products through their lifecycle. Due to the PLM type role, there is a need to be the subject matter expert, leading to marketing writing, including: datasheets, application notes, technical notes, white papers and brochure text. Typically I will also author or co-author and present engineering/R&D papers at conferences. The managerial element of the role encompasses management of three direct reports; a Senior Applications Engineer, Graduate Sales and Applications Engineer and Sales and Purchasing Administrator to ensure the sales team have world class support to enable Fibercore’s USP as offering the best sales service in the business. Historically, I have managed up to five members of the sales team and seven foreign distributors simultaneously.

Responsible for global sales in all regions, excluding North America. This role involved maintaining close customer relations with the existing customer base and starting to build a broader customer and applications base away from the two dominant sectors of telecoms and fiber optic gyroscopes.

Responsible for assisting the optical design of Sharp's wafer level mobile phone camera.Working as a technical liaison between the Sharp - Japan factory and Nokia - Finland as well as Nokia - UK development groups.Identifying new technologies for use in wafer level cameras.This role required multiple trips to Japan and the USA including a short secondment to Sharp factories in Fukuyama and Nara.

Designed and developed Fibre Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors and inscription systems. The PhD included industrial sponsorship from Indigo Photonics where I assisted with setting up the FBG production systems for apodized uniform and chirped FBGs. This predominantly included telecoms applications focused on channel filters and tunable dispersion compensators. The FBG inscription systems setup included: scanning beam/phase mask systems, "direct write"/psuedo-point by point systems and interferometric/holographic (non-phase mask) systems. The sensors developed included: Micro-spatial resolution FBG sensors for thermal and strain sensing , mechanical wear sensors and sensor network failure mitigation designs.

Working with Indigo's fibre Bragg grating (FBG) team to set up a point-by-point UV laser fabrication system and manufacture and test FBGs.
