Andy H. Email and Phone Number
I worked in a number of challenging roles before entering the IT profession. Formerly employed as a care worker for people with Cerebral Palsy, in a variety of capacities as a manual worker and also as a contract cleaner, this wide range of experiences has helped me bring a unique perspective to my work.In championing virtualisation I took the x86 server environment of The University of Sheffield in 2006 from ~100 physical servers to a consolidated environment now of 40 blade servers running VMware. This enabled the University to not only save money on hardware costs and to become much more environmentally friendly, but also allowed expansion of services running in the VMware environment enabling greater innovation - the VMware environment now runs ~2600 live servers and ~200 development servers.Specialties: Server architecture, server virtualisation using VMware, Netapp enterprise storage, multi-protocol access to server systems, and providing high quality technical guidance and advice to University wide projects.I am motivated to provide all technical assistance from a position guided by diplomacy, understanding, and an interest in achieving best value for the organisation and all of those involved. In short - Running the fundamental infrastructure systems that keep the bits, bytes, chit & chat moving behind the wainscoting that masks the grubby, but delightful, fabric of our environment.

Server & Storage Group Leader And Unix Group LeaderThe University Of Sheffield Jan 2011 - PresentSheffield, United KingdomIn November 2016 I temporarily took responsibility for the Unix Group as well as the Server & Storage Group until a replacement was found for the Unix Group Leader.I have responsibility for a team of ten who manage our VMware virtual server environment, our Netapp filers, OES and Windows servers, Linux servers, Solaris servers, HPC, and backup and recovery of all centrally managed server and storage systems. The increased resilience we build in to our systems by design enables greater ease of management by the small number of staff involved. -

Server & Storage AdministratorThe University Of Sheffield Jan 2005 - Dec 2010Sheffield, United KingdomResponsible for Novell Netware, our enterprise storage on Netapp filers, the VMware server virtualisation environment, printing, and backup and recovery of all of the above and the Unix/Linux environment.I developed and implemented the VMware virtualisation environment at the University of Sheffield in 2005. The virtual environment has grown to run over 99% of the x86 based services and consists of over 600 live guest-servers and 200 test and development guest-servers. VMware using Netapp storage architecture has given us flexibility and agility to deal with the many demanding requirements we have at the University given the complexity of the environment . Management of these diverse areas has been very rewarding. The success of the virtualisation environment has been very satisfying to me as a personal achievement and has been of environmental benefit too, not just saving the University hundreds of thousands of pounds in hardware and power cost but also massively reducing power consumption. -
