About Andy Harbison

Datalogic, headquartered in Bologna, Italy, is a premier manufacturer of bar code reading equipment for the retail, mobile, manufacturing and parcel delivery industries. In addition, Datalogic manufactures box dimensioning products that determine the sizes of parcels as they pass by at high speeds on a conveyor. These are certified legal-for-trade systems that allow parcel delivery firms to charge customers based on the size of their shipments and provide accuracy of within 0.1 inch in US certifications (NTEP) and within 5 mm in international certifications (OIML).Prior to Datalogic, Software design architect with three products that generated over one billion dollars in sales in the wireless, wire-line and medical industries. The three products are:1. The TruePosition Location Measurement Unit (LMU).2. The L3 Communications Secure Terminal Equipment (STE).3. The Sterling Medical Lynx Diagnostic Imager.Hands-on programmer with experience in C and C++, seeing my designs through to profits.Named on 4 US patents. • Datalogic Automation (Formerly Accu-Sort Systems)
    Senior Software Engineer
Datalogic Automation (Formerly Accu-Sort Systems) Jan 2012 - Present
    Telford, Pa
In this position I develop C/C++ software for Datalogic box-dimensioning products. This includes the DM3610 dimensioning head and the DC3000 dimensioning controller. The DM3610 is a small, powerful laser-based unit capable of standalone, legal-for-trade dimensioning of cuboidal parcels. The processor contained therein is a TI TMS320DM6446 which is composed of an ARM936 core, peripheral interface support and C64 DSP in the same package. I am fully responsible for the code in the DM3610 head. All development is done using TI Code Composer Studio which supports both processors. The ARM processor runs the Nucleus RTOS, the DSP runs DSP BIOS.The DC3000 is an Advantech core i3 industrial PC. It runs Fedora Linux which serves as both the development and target operating system. It is capable of legal-for-trade dimensioning of arbitrarily shaped parcels by providing the dimensions of a minimum bounding box. It uses dual DM3610 heads to provide input data. I am a member of a small team of software engineers that work on the DC3000.After the completion of the standard software for the DM3610 and DC3000 I completed several customer-specific customizations that typically involved integration with scales, PLCs (conveyor systems) and bar codes reading equipment. Customers included UPS, Fedex, Walmart, Amazon and DPD (a major international parcel delivery firm headquartered in Germany). Moderate domestic and international travel has been required for installation and customer support.Designed and implemented a methodology to focus linear bar code reading cameras with both the DC3000 and DM3610Designed and developed software that stores and retrieves required audit and alibi data for legal-for-trade installations. This was done without use of a file system for speed and efficiency.Extremely proficient in Ethernet socket communications (TCP/UDP) and XMLKnowledgeable in maintaining user interfaces using webservers, HTML, JavaScriptUsed Subversion/Bugzilla
  • Kelly Mitchell Group, Inc.
Contracting Sw Engineer (Abbott Point Of Care, Princeton, Nj)
Kelly Mitchell Group, Inc. Jan 2011 - Sep 2011
Developed a board support package, boot loader and application shell for a handheld blood analyzer. This was done using a TI AM3505 processor (ARM Cortex A8 based) and VxWorks 6.x RTOS in the Workbench (eclipse) development environment. Integrated the Datalight FlashFx Pro product for NAND flash management and the Tilcon Graphics package to support a touch screen.
  • Trueposition
    Principal Software Engineer
    Trueposition Aug 1997 - Dec 2010
Designed, wrote and supported real time embedded SW for various generations of the TruePosition Location Measurement Unit (LMU) and GPS Receiver. These were components of the TruePosition Wireless Location System (WLS) that was widely deployed in the ATT and T-Mobile wireless infrastructure to satisfy the FCC E911 customer location mandate. The LMU SW executed on various Motorola/Freescale processors based on the PowerPC (and predecessor) architecture using VxWorks. The GPS receiver was implemented on an Altera NIOS processor.Named inventor on three patents held jointly by TruePosition and MIT (6,661,379 6,483,460 and 6,400,320).Developed BSPs and integrated custom HW and SW using ICE, BDM, logic analyzers, etc.Became very well versed in wireless (GSM, UMTS, CDMA) and telephony (T1) protocols.Used IBM Rational Clearcase and Clearquest.
  • L3 Communications
    Principal Member Engineering Staff
    L3 Communications Jan 1982 - Aug 1997
