About Andy Pierce
I am very lucky to work in an industry that I love. Turning an ordinary space into something special, drawing focus one way, whilst diverting attention from another, or just flashing lights to some great music. I have been lighting since school. As soon as I realised I could have a career in it I studied for a BSc in Live Event Technology and it began. I’ve enjoyed programming for theatre, operating for gigs and designing for corporate events, including one particular party set across seven individually themed boats. I feel just as at home in a theatre as I do in a field. I enjoy working in the warehouse, learning the kit inside out, how it all works and importantly how to fix it. But now I’m looking to pick up where I left off pre-COVID and get back on-site with some freelance work.I’m readily available for evening and weekend work around the North Yorkshire/East Riding areas, although with a little notice I can be available during the week.

Warehouse Manager
In my role at All Safe and Sound, the knowledge I’ve built up is utilised when preparing equipment for events. Double checking pick lists to ensure all items that are required to make a system work are not missed off and discussions with production managers about alternatives if equipment is unavailable. The role varies from prioritising which jobs need to be prepared, delegating warehouse tasks to members of the team, to working on my own in the warehouse when the others are out delivering.Where possible, equipment is pre-set before it goes to site in order to make it plug-and-play, reducing the set-up time on-site. This happens across all event equipment, including setting speaker profiles on amplifiers, assigning radio mic frequencies, linking wireless comms and patching lighting fixtures. Regular feedback is requested with production managers and technicians on how the preparation and packing of equipment could be further improved.
Technician
In my role at Lamp & Pencil, I was installing set electrics for a variety of musicals heading to venues across the world and assembling custom controls for these set pieces. The role utilised my construction and electronics skills. Part of the role involved organising the warehouse. I introduced processes, which improved the time it took to book out items and allowed the tracking of items borrowed from stock, reducing the amount of items getting lost.
Lighting Project Manager
In my role a Smyle I was managing the lighting department: designing lighting for corporate events, preparing equipment and installing it on-site. Repairing and maintaining all equipment was also one of my key responsibilities, ensuring it was electrically safe and routinely tested. In this role I had to be flexible with my workload and confident in prioritising tasks in order to manage my own and freelancers’ time effectively. One of the events I designed for Smyle was the lighting for a music event for a major brand based across seven boats on the River Thames. Each boat had a different theme and provided guests with a particular genre of music for the night. During the design I collaborated with the scenic artist and the construction team to make sure the lighting was adequate for the event, themed appropriately and practical to build into the set. Once designed, I had to prepare the equipment ready for each boat and ensure it made it onboard. The event required me to organise and manage a team of freelance technicians, prioritising their time on each boat so they could depart on time.
Senior Research And Development Engineer
Theater Technician
When working as a theatre technician, I gained experience in all aspects of theatre: lighting, sound, video projection and stage management. The involvement with each show would vary from assisting visiting companies with their get-in and get-out, to operating for the in-house productions. I applied the skills learnt at university to live events and became familiar with the use of digital sound desks, radio mics and lighting desks. Working as Duty Stage Manager, I would take charge of the stage ensuring the appropriate Health and Safety regulations were adhered to and liaised with the Front of House team handing the auditorium over when the stage was ready. While at the Wyvern theatre, I took on the operation of sound for many of the produced and assisted shows, including the theatre’s pantomime and Summer Youth Project. The youth project involved teaching the young technicians how to set up mics for a band, run radio mics and mix the performances themselves. During the rehearsal stages for any production, I’d listen in various places around the auditorium to ensure the sound quality is equal all over.In the downtime I had experience assisting with the LOLER rigging inspections along with PAT testing the technical equipment. During the Theatre’s Summer Youth Project, I enjoyed teaching young technicians the different aspects of backstage theatre, helping them produce their own week-long production.
