About Andy Machin

I have been in Learning & Development since 1999 and in that time I have been a trainer, developer, project manager, training operations manager and strategy manager. I am passionate about learning and have plenty of experience of what makes good (and bad!) training. My goal is to extend the reach of L&D beyond the classroom and support people's learning in the workplace, after all this is where most of the learning happens! My goal is to create an environment that minimises the time to competency through a mix of formal, informal and experiential learning and performance support tools.There is still a place for formal, instructor led training, it is the essential foundation upon which skills and knowledge are built, but without good workplace learning opportunities most of the knowledge and skills gained in the classroom will be lost and the skills will never be developed to their full potential. I am a huge advocate of the 70:20:10 model and apply it to all of my thinking, My philosophy is that your development is too important to leave it entirely up to L&D, take ownership of it and let L&D help you on your development journey. I believe that an effective L&D enables learning rather than manages it.
