I took the opportunity to join a small company engaged in the growing area of automotive software. With this geographically dispersed team, I now concentrate on embedded software tools development. The technological advances in this area satisfy my keen interest in small but powerful systems that execute time critical control algorithms.

I assumed a team leadership role in the UK to develop and apply previously developed technologies further.My time was divided between management and hands-on activities in the following areas:• Consultancy on software & electronics• Recruitment, training and development• Listening• Planning and allocation of tasks• System design & bid preparation• Liaison with other departments• User interface software in C#• Real time C++ under QNX• Time critical closed loop C applications• Specification writing• Industrial networks and distributed solutions

Encouraged by previous industry contacts, I and a colleague developed a distributed I/O system that transformed not only ROV design, but also enabled bespoke projects. Initially, I was closely involved in the core electronics architecture. Thereafter, my focus progressed from the embedded software of the new designs through to the vehicle control and user interface software.Working with a software team in Florida, I took part in the development of the ‘ICE’ software currently used on all company ROVs.

An interesting opportunity arose at the University of York to join an electronics design consultancy. In this post I was able to widen my experience in areas such as Internet technology, project management, staff supervision and customer liaison. I was also actively involved in marketing the centre’s skills and developing a future strategy.I continued to contribute at a technical level where appropriate. I also learnt to supervise without possessing complete knowledge of the underlying technology. My most significant contribution was to project manage the implementation of a university-wide smart card scheme
