Work responsibilities for the Wastewater Technology Centre were to develop new treatment technologies and conduct a technology transfer program to assist consultants, industries, municipalities, and other government agencies. My main focus was a four year pilot scale field study for the development and demonstration of high rate treatment of combined sewer overflows (CSO’s). Data collected from this investigation, the first of this scale in Canada, identified performance characteristics, design parameters and operational considerations necessary for full scale construction. Other projects included:• Composite Correction Program (CCP) for optimization of sewage treatment plants. A program designed to improve the performance, in terms of capital and operational improvements, of existing municipal sewage treatment plants in Ontario.• Nitrification and On/Off aeration studies of existing municipal sewage treatment plants to improve capital expenditures• Ethylene glycol full scale study with the Greater Toronto Airports Authority and Lakeview STP. A pilot-scale study for the use of Autothermal Thermophlic Aerobic Digestion (ATAD) for the treatment of ethylene glycol to achieve capital savings through operational costs for the Greater Toronto Airports.• Pilot-scale study for the use of Autothermal Thermophlic Aerobic Digestion (ATAD) for the treatment of Poly-Aeromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) contaminated soils. The study was in conjunction with Hamilton Habour Remedial Action Plan;• Field pilot plant study. The fate of specific compounds found in pulping wastewater was under investigation to determine toxicity and removal mechanisms. I was stationed in Espanola, Ontario where I was responsible for managing the R&D operation of a pilot-scale wastewater treatability unit• Bench-scale experiments to optimize three existing biological treatment systems for enhanced removal of Adsorbable Organic Halides (AOX) and Chlorophenolic compounds

Summer contract work for the air monitoring section in the west central region. Duties included sampling for air contaminants such as SO2, TRS, COH, etc.. Responsibilities also included sample collection, data entry, reporting to senior personnel, service and maintenance of high volume samplers in the region. I was also involved with VOC sampling at the Glenridge Landfill site and monitoring of PCB contamination at the Smithville PCB storage facility. Results and data collected were used for environmental impact and assessment studies and reports.
