Senior Cloud Architect
From November 2011 to the present day I have worked for Spencer Stuart. My current position is Senior Cloud Architect on the Architecture Team. This is an extremely diverse role which places me in the centre of many aspects of Spencer Stuart's continuing migration to the AWS cloud. I work closely with the Development, Build/Deploy, InfoSec and Operations Teams to ensure smooth and secure development, deployment and operation of a suite of cloud based products for both internal and external customers. The Architecture Team is split across the Dublin development office and the Chicago head office. I act as the lead of the Dublin Architecture Team and play a central role in co-ordinating activities between departments in disparate time zones.I am also deeply involved at the strategic level and engage with management and the other stakeholders in building and executing a future vision for IT within the company. This vision aligns to industry and AWS best practices towards moving away from Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) towards Platform as a Service (PaaS) solutions. We continue to relentlessly drive towards the adoption of managed services, containerization and serverless architectures as a means to eliminate undifferentiated heavy lifting and allow focus on delivering business functionality to the end users.Previous to this I was the Technical Lead of one of Spencer Stuart's development teams. During this time I was involved to some degree in almost all aspects of the development of the Quest platform, from its conception to its release to the business and its continued development Specifically, I built a suite of SOAP / REST services; RabbitMQ message publishers / subscribers; managed database interactions both directly and making extensive use of nHibernate; helped develop a SOLR based search engine and helped move the company’s ASP MVC based web front end to a more modern Angular / Typescript based approach for newer parts of the application.
Senior Software Engineer
From July 2010 – November 2011 I worked for Pocket Kings Ltd. as a Senior Software Engineer in the Tools Team. The company provided a complete IT infrastructure for one of the largest online poker sites in the world. On the Tools Team, I built a suite of applications for business users both in and outside the company as well as IT facing tools for developers, QA staff and Operations staff. To perform its function the team employed a wide variety of technologies. All web development was done using ASP.NET MVC with extensive use of Javascript and jQuery on the client side. On the server-side everything was written in C# with extensive use of LINQ. I was a strong proponent of Service Orientated Architecture (SOA) and had great success with pushing all business logic into a suite of WCF web-services. I also moved the team towards adopting unit testing and a test-driven approach to writing software. From a design perspective, I helped foster adoption of Domain Driven Design (DDD) as a means of isolating business logic from technical and presentation concerns in a multi-layer architecture. I have a strong grasp of classic design patterns and possess a solid understanding of the theory and practice of Object Oriented Design.
Senior Software Engineer
From October 2008 to July 2010 I worked as a Senior Software Engineer in the On-line Services Team which provides a platform for all of AEGON Ireland's secured services. The team operated in ASP.NET. Within that context, I honed strong skills in C#, LINQ, AJAX, nHibernate, XML and jQuery. I built a range of WCF web services to support various projects at AEGON and contributed towards a shift to Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) within the company.
Software Engineer
I spent 4 years working for a smart card specialist company called SmartCentric Technologies as a Software Engineer. My work was varied and touched on many aspects of software development. A large portion of my time was spent writing embedded C/C++ code for point of sale devices as well as lower level devices such as parking meters. I also wrote applications for transaction collection and processing as well as smart card interaction. These applications were all written in C# and ASP.NET but included a large back catalogue of C++ and VB6 code. A large part of what the company does is based around secure transaction processing which involves heavy use of cryptography.
Software Engineer
I worked on a 6-month college placement with the Revenue Commissioners during the summer of 2002. I worked in the Revenue On-Line program, which is a highly successful project allowing Irish people to pay their taxes on-line. My work here was almost exclusively in Java.
