My job role at Tuckwell’s is a cement mixer HGV driver which consists of delivering concrete across Oxfordshire to small independent builders and large national building sites. My responsibilities include making sure my lorry is safe and road worthy every day, the correct concrete mix is delivered efficiently and on time to the customer. During quieter days I drive either a 7.5 tonne tipper or a 32 tonne tipper depending on what type of load needs to be delivered or picked up. I also help out on the weigh bridge guiding customers to the correct location for aggregate collections, print out tickets and invoices for said customers. Additionally I work along side one of the technical guys to make sure the concrete is up to spec by making cubes from samples and having them sent off for analysis.

Talboys Utilities are a subsidiary of Thames Water and are responsible for fixing customer side water leaks. My responsibilities included manually digging holes, using moling gear, making sure the site was safe at all times, laying new water pipes to bypass any leaks. At all times abiding by the strict Health and Safety rules. Reinstate and making good each area with concrete, tarmac or grass patching. Some times I was required to drive a 7.5 tonnes truck to different gangs to drop off materials and take spoil and old materials away.

Driving up and down the UK in an HGV1 lorry to various depots to drop off empty stillages and collect full new ones to be delivered to the BMW Factory in Cowley, Oxford. Responsibilities included driving in a safe and responsible manner. Meeting tight deadlines to allocated time slots. Good understanding of the drive’s tacho rules and regulations. At all times being aware that I was representing the company.

Driving around the streets of Oxfordshire working along side a team of 3 loaders. Negotiating tight spaces wether it be driving down narrow single track roads or a cul de sac full of parked cars/street furniture in the way. Filling out daily check sheets at the start of every day.Making sure the lorry is cleaned, fuelled, empty of waste and wheels are torqued every week without fail. Dealing with members of the public, wether it be passing them their bin to going back to some properties to collect their missed bin. Wearing my correct PPE at all times and sticking to strict instructions when going on to the waste landfill where we tip the truck.

Activities include; serving customers, ordering parts / stock, answering the telephone, cleaning, replenishing shelves, helping to cash up and locking up. I gave advice and help to customers, I did audio fitting when needed and I worked on my own when the Manager was unable to work at weekends.

I started off as an Apprentice Mechanic.My duties included cleaning, collecting cars, servicing, carrying out all types of motor repairs and valeting. I completed my 3 year course and I am a fully qualified Mechanic.
