Objective: To support the development and implementation of BBSRC strategy and policy in bioscience researchKey responsibilities:• Understand and positively forward BBSRC's strategically-relevant science funding areas, to propose and act upon ways to improve those areas, through portfolio data analysis, stakeholder engagement, position papers, impact case studies and influencial presentations. In effect, a 'knowledgeable friend' to users, internal and external, in multiple areas of bioscience.• Management of multi-million pound funding programmes across their pre-funding stages, to enhance the UK's capacity and capability in strategic areas. • I had the exciting opportunity to set the foundations of the UK Animal Welfare Research Network; to this day it continues to support the animal welfare community. I also oversaw BBSRC's activities aligining to policies on animal welfare/usage in research.• Design and fulfilment of workshops, committee meetings and working groups , which lead to, for example, the publication of four thought-pieces about water in relation to agriculture, and the UK Gov's Animal and Plant Health Strategy's initial international prioritisation and potential project scopes adopting the "Internet of Agri-Things". • Secretariat for the Agriculture & Food Security Strategy Advisory Panel, maintaining regular, structured meetings using a well-defined and logical panel rationalised by my papers to the Appointments Board.

Objective: To contribute to BBSRC's core business by managing the delivery of its Responsive Mode peer review process.Key responsibilities:• Understand the complex arrays of research grant applications to anoint highly suitable expertise to roles within the peer review system, e.g. review panels made up of diverse and fleixble panel members that can grapple with complex, specialised bundles of applications. • Overseen the peer review process of applications over many cycles: manage the peer review assessment meeting, and act as the first decision point and issue resolver, including difficult remit query resolutions• Developed the strategic case for appointing new members to expert revew panels. • Encouraged academics and industry collaborative working though schemes (LINK and Industrial Partnership Awards). • Open to new tools and ways of thinking to drive operational improvements, e.g. fixed a complex VBA-Excel workbook so that it provided a great user interface for portfolop management.
