With more than 20 years in the health care industry, I lead organizations from problems to solutions. More specifically, I help senior care companies improve their business outcomes through mergers and acquisitions (M&A), repositioning, operational discipline, and turnaround strategy implementation. As Vice President of Business Development for Benedictine, which operates dozens of communities across 5 states in senior care services, I’ve overseen the acquisition of more than $80 million in assets. My role in this process is from soup to nuts, strategic planning and vision for growth through to facilitating transition teams to seamlessly integrate new businesses into the legacy organization. Beyond acquisition, my role in this organization also looks to growth through redevelopment of current facilities, improving customer experience and elevating services; through expansion projects, adding more than 280 units via building new facilities; and through expansion of service offerings that are in-line with the business model, such as low-income housing and cooperative senior housing. Solving problems has long been my profession. As my first role as Administrator & CEO, I was told when hired that the owners were going to close the community. With my team, I revitalized the company from its failing state to one that is still open today, seeing the best results in company history on a percentage basis. I found operating the business, diagnosing and solving problems, motivating people and creating strategy to be very enjoyable. Whether it is working with my team to perform a market analysis on a potential acquisition or creating transition teams to ease the transition, people leadership and motivation is a crucial part of what I do every day. To do so well, I listen and understand first, extending respect to those around me, while continuing to seek change. I’ve had the pleasure of working with and mentoring a number of individuals who have gone on to create thriving professional lives defining, measuring, and focusing on key performance indicators and leading teams of their own. It’s my honor to pass these skills on to others so that they may effect change and aid in the quality deliverables of this industry. As a seasoned executive, leader, and problem solver, I welcome conversations that help you to get through to the solution. If that’s you, send me a message!

Vice President, Business Development | Mergers & Acquisitions | Market Analysis | Transition ExpertBenedictine Oct 2009 - PresentFridley, Minnesota, UsPromoted to Vice President of Business Development after serving as Vice President, Long-term Care Operations (2009-2016) and Vice President Operations and Development (2016-2017), I sit as a key member of the executive leadership team and answer to the CEO. In this business development role, I drive expansion of the business and am responsible for mergers and acquisitions, increasing acquisition deal flow, and developing (or redeveloping) senior living assets. In guiding the review and capital allocation of the organization, I’ve driven the development of more than $80 million in assets. My success can be attributed, in part, to solid leadership and management of relationships. I work with a team of interdepartmental professionals to accomplish each task. I also build and nourish relationships within the industry to ensure a strong pipeline for business development. Additionally, each acquisition meets rigorous testing from not only myself, but CEO, CFO and General Counsel, and fits into a strategic plan. Of course, the job is not done with the purchase of a new site or system; it is also within the scope of this experience to assemble transition teams and oversee the onboarding of people and systems into the Benedictine organization. Additional responsibilities include overseeing construction and design, crafting pro formas to finance projects, and evaluating new business opportunities. In overseeing development effectively—from pro forma through 1-year warranty checks on completed projects—I formalized an organizational approach to development, a system that includes development guardrails, market selection, guidance of unit and staffing standards, land acquisition and building cost metrics. Since instituting this organizational approach, I have completed 2 greenfield developments, 6 redevelopments/repositions, and 4 acquisitions. ---Benedictine Health System is a not-for-profit, faith-based organization operating 35 communities in 5 states. -
Administrator, Ceo | Turnaround Strategy | Competitive Analysis | Quality Care ProviderLiving Services Foundation - Winsted Nov 2004 - Oct 2010In this role, I engineered and executed an operational turnaround from a 7% annual loss to a 4.5% growth rate, as compared to the state average of 2.5% for this time period, which resulted in a 30% increase in revenue over about 2 years. This turnaround happened in stages, beginning with diagnosing and correcting key issues of poor performance, contributing factors to this were market positioning, cost control, customer mix, and cultural change. Via market analysis, marketing measuring tools, systematic cost controls, and a new vision for the future alongside a marketing plan that disseminated it. Key areas in which we saw success as a result of these efforts included stabilizing revenues and an optimum customer mix that complemented our revenue goals. Next, I addressed quality by putting in place systems, such as referral tracking and management, admission process improvement, and departmental cost controls tied to occupancy. The fruits of this labor were born in 2007 when the organization was awarded the Silver American Health Care Association (AHCA) National Quality Award, Silver. My turnaround strategies and change management continued to provide for increases in profitability and quality with my successor, whom I selected, trained, and helped direct in my next role, as evident in the organization’s 2012 receipt of the Gold AHCA Quality Award. ---Living Services Foundation is a non-profit corporation; this role included direct employment by Benedictine, which was leasing the facility and managing it at the time.

Interim Administrator, Ceo | Change Management | Corporate Systems ImplementationGlenoaks Senior Care Campus Dec 2007 - May 2008In this interim, 6-month role I facilitated the acquisition of the stand-alone facility to a member of the Benedictine Health System and installed corporate systems to ensure this transition’s success. This is the second acquisition that I oversaw—the first being the management of a senior apartment building next to St. Mary’s (which is a piece of the larger Living Services Foundation – Winstead above). Notable accomplishments in this period included the writing and receipt of an AHCA National Quality Award, Bronze. ---GlenOaks Senior Living Campus is an independent living, assisted living, rehabilitation, home health, and skilled services facilitated based in Minnesota. This role included: new business development, lead generation, budget management, and implementation of new systems.
