I was born in Toronto, Canada. My mother is Canadian, my father is British, and I grew up in Massachusetts as a member of our newly-Americanized family. As a tri-citizen, I have family in all three countries. In Canada, I noted the 9-month wait time my grandfather had to endure between his primary care appointment and a scheduled MRI. In England, I was shocked at the high rate of chain cigarette smoking; many of my relatives smoked two packs a day. In the United States, I have observed the overwhelming presence of fast food restaurants; in my role as a medical dietitian, helping illiterate patients understand important nutritional information has proven to be a personal challenge. My cultural background as an immigrant-turned-citizen has been instrumental in my introduction to and continued self-education on multiple aspects of health care, including health policy and comorbidities. I became interested in healthcare as a teenager. As I helped my father lose weight through diet and exercise, I developed an affinity for helping people through difficult situations. Being the catalyst for my father’s health transformation led me to my current vocational path. At the Ohio State University, I majored in medical dietetics. I knew the knowledge I would gain regarding the effects of food on the body, coupled with my motivational skills, could improve people’s health. As a dietetic intern, I worked in various geographical locations and settings: food service, community health, clinical, long-term care, a gastroenterology clinic, a clinical research center, and the veteran affairs clinic. I have counseled patients of many different backgrounds, races, and ethnicities. The conversations I have had with the people within these distinct populations have broadened my cultural perspective. The dietetic rotations at OSU provided me with the opportunity to help people with dietary issues, giving me great professional satisfaction.
