The construction industry is a high risk industry where the creation and implementation of safe systems of work is critical to the safe running of a site no matter how large or small that site is.As a senior Worksafe Inspector in Victoria I often attend sites where incidents have occurred owing to poor systems or where good systems have been poorly managed or even circumvented.The time of year leading up to Christmas is often called the silly season as duty holders and employees rush to finish work before the Christmas break, this situation can lead to those involved in high risk work tasks taking short cuts that can, in turn, lead to incidents causing serious injury or worse.The message to duty holders at this time of year is be very mindful of site workers and contractors rushing and taking short cuts. Raise the issue with site personnel and get workers to re-focus.In Victoria 25% of all fatalities occur in the last 2 months of the year.The message to the industry is please take care, take time to re-focus and revise your systems of work if necessary....
