About Andy Swanson

Expert One Price Dealer with a Driving Passion for More. I spent years dreaming about getting an advanced degree in order to teach American Political Development. It's a fascinating subset of American History that answers a question: why did our experiment in Democracy work? At one point I thought I was going to spend my life teaching and writing political history, but something happened along the way: I needed to make money. Seriously, I had a mortgage. And, in truth there's no competition in teaching history. I just didn't see a lot of passion to win from my friends in the faculty lounge.So I sold cars. I loved selling cars! More importantly, I'm great at selling cars and I love having something to chase so I threw myself into it, but really I'm a problem solver and there's nowhere near enough challenges in a car deal to satisfy me forever, so I ended up in special finance. A mentor of mine looked at me and said, "that guy has almost unlimited capacity for these brain damage deals" and he put me in charge of special finance for a dealership. It turns out I did have an unlimited capacity for tough deals! It also turns out that Special Finance is just a combination of two of my favorite things: selling cars to people who really needed them and math. In short order, I ended up in charge of Special Finance for a Dealer Group. But there are always more problems and greater challenges at the next level, so I kept growing and eventually, I found myself running a dealership.Today, it's a passion for mastery and autonomy and a driving sense of purpose that keeps me going. I find that the challenges and the problems of dealer life are almost always solved with a clean inventory, great digital and local process, and a lot of passionate people out to win with you. In any dealership the bottom line on a Financial Statement is the ultimate measure, but nothing's more fun than winning. Chase market share, build a better inventory, adapt to what comes, build a better digital process, stay ahead of the competition, find and develop great people; these are the things that get me out of bed in the morning. I like money, but I love the feeling that comes with building a committed, passionate, driven team that's in it together.

    I helped create, open, and develop the Walser Finance Center. We built a centralized financed operation to streamline the finance process by entirely removing finance managers from the dealerships. Removing finance managers was the last major component needed to truly execute a one person, one price model. We created a process where a salesperson in the store could do an application with a customer, submit that application along with a deal worksheet and they would receive back a Menu with lender stipulations. We started with just two people and a plan. In just 60 days we developed a complete process to handle finance in a centralized location, hired and trained a full staff of 15 people, and grew from handling the finance for 1 store to handling all 11 Walser branded dealerships in the group. Finally, as the sub-prime specialist for the group, I not only handled second chance deals, I also had underwriting authority for our related finance corporation and was able to structure, underwrite, and approve loans "on the spot."

    The goal of this position was both to oversee an expansion into the deep subprime market by Walser's related finance corporation and to help the Walser Automotive group create a scalable used car brand. On a day to day basis I was a GSM in charge of expanding the subprime footprint and helping to open the two UsedCarXpress dealerships. I handled all aspects of training for the salespeople, sales managers, and finance. I sourced and purchased cars for both traditional used car operations and specifically for special finance inventory. At a group level I reported to the Finance Director and the head of the stores for the used car brands.

    I initially took the lead Finance Manager position at Walser Subaru. In the first month I set the PVR for the store. Within six months we'd reset the store average at $300 per month higher than the previous record and at double the old average. Walser Subaru constantly ran above Subaru benchmark performance; our VSC penetration was never below 40% - and often in the 50th percentile - and our true power rating on the core five products of VSC, GAP, Environmental, Lease Care, and T&W was always over 100%. CIT list stayed clean with minimal issues and solid funding times (this was pre eContracting) and every deal got bought.I moved into the sales manager role as we were the first store in the Walser Group to transition away from specific F&I personnel and into "One Person, One Price."
