I joined BEIS at an early stage of the development of the Longer Duration Energy Storage competition and took a lead role in the drafting of the competition guidance. This involved:• Drafting competition guidance ensuring that the assessment process for competition applicants met the expressed goals of the programme’s business case.• Ensuring consistency between a wide range of public-facing documentation including competition guidance, indicative funding agreements, supporting technical documents and model templates for applicants. • Liaising with multiple departments within BEIS to ensure the goals of the competition were met and to ensure compliance with relevant legislature relating to two different funding mechanisms.• Acting as a subject matter expert for peers and managers within my directorate.• Developing a financial model template for competition applications. Performing initial analysis of the financial models submitted by applicants.• Participation in all assessment moderation panels and acting as a moderation chair.• Performing data analysis on and presenting data from the assessment and moderation process.• Helping organise a virtual engagement event for competition launch. Presenting on the goals and design of the competition both virtually and in person.With the programme moving into the delivery phase, I continued to be responsible for:• Agreeing contractual terms, milestones and conducting kick-off meetings with awarded projects.• Management and reporting on projects, liaising with third-party monitoring officers and acting as a technical and commercial advisor to the wider directorate.• Acting as a point of contact for policy-making teams, feeding back programme data, discussing its context and advising on possible market interventions.• Ensuring that broader programme objectives and key performance indicators were properly captured and reported on.

A short-term contract for The Open University in partnership with Royal Dutch Shell. The project aims to determine the most likely early markets for a hydrogen economy.• Producing a briefing document for stakeholders in a 2020/21 project, “Where will material hydrogen production arise first?”• Constructing a financial model.

A full-time PhD study funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. I have successfully completed my viva voce examination. My PhD involved:• Development of a novel methodology for market-led engineering design of power plants.• Conveying complex concepts to a non-expert audience.• Excellent written skills for both the written thesis and for publications.• Peer-review of papers for the journal ‘ICE Energy’.• Coding with the Modelica language, a derivative of C used for engineering modelling.• Complex financial modelling in the face of uncertainty using Monte Carlo methods.• Data acquisition, collation, and analysis of a large dataset.• Critical analysis of literature and datasets.• Data analysis visualisation using a variety of techniques with large datasets.• Visits to Idaho National Lab and Oak Ridge National Lab in the USA.• Visits to research reactors in Romania and Norway.• An entrepreneurship course at Cambridge Judge Business School.• Leading production of an exhibit at the Cambridge Science Festival.An early version of this work has been peer-reviewed and published by the Energy Policy Research Group at Cambridge University available here: https://www.eprg.group.cam.ac.uk/eprg-working-paper-2001/

A full-time MSc studyed at Imperial College, achieving a distinction. The course involved: • A project, ‘Advanced Gas-cooled Reactors as precursors to the Very High Temperature Reactor’ exploring synergies between nuclear power and hydrogen.• Thermal hydraulics, reactor physics, nuclear chemical engineering, engineering modelling, nuclear materials, waste management and nuclear safety modules.

Secondment including offshore work and office-based support. This included:• Working in the grouting team offshore on the Edvard Grieg jacket installation project.• Regular use and high proficiency with Creo Parametric.• Attending project kick-off meetings and responding to client queries.• Writing project documentation, procedures and quality assurance documents.• Understanding of the design and operation of FoundOcean grouting equipment

Increased responsibility role within the commercial team. This included:• Training and mentoring new team members.• Extremely high attention to detail in checking work and reviewing contractual terms.• Liaising with the Operations department for handover meetings and highlighting possible contractual issues.• Dealing with atypical client inquiries, meeting with clients and attending trade shows.• Creating revenue projections, maintaining Excel bid models with VBA macros.

Commercial role centred around the preparation of tenders. This included:• Ability to manage my own significant workload and tight deadlines.• Rapid learning of technical knowledge in the offshore industry.• Ability to speak to both technical and non-technical client representatives.• Formally dealing with clients at project meetings.

My duties mainly involved dealing with customer queries relating to the company’s social housing schemes. This drew on my previous Customer Service experience as residents have often had tough lives or have a disability and need to be treated with a high level of care. This often required problem solving skills as the queries we come across are incredibly varied and one often needed to organise several areas of the business to address a customer’s need.

Duties primarily included working with our pension providers to ensure the smooth running of the pension scheme. This involved running reports and performing quality assurance to ensure all employees contribute the correct amount to their pensions. In addition to this I was involved in training new employees and ensuring our processes were as streamlined and as up to date as possible. I was also an important resource for my colleagues for mentoring and training. I left to make a start on completing my studies.
