Andy Alford is an award-winning leader in the communications field who has spent more than 25 years writing, editing and supporting journalists. She is the director of recruitment, training and career development at The Texas Tribune, an industry-leading nonpartisan, nonprofit digital news operation that was named a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2024. Previously, she was managing editor at the Austin American-Statesman. She is serving her third term as president of the board of directors of Texas Managing Editors.In her time at the Statesman, Ms. Alford helped lead the newsroom through transformative change, including advancing systems and strategies as the newspaper transitioned to digital and social platforms. She has vast experience in analyzing audience data to set content and messaging strategies, managing teams and projects, and identifying and developing talent. She has a long history of driving business results by fostering inclusion and leveraging the diversity of employees, suppliers, customers and communities.Ms. Alford’s career highlights include projects that shine light on the needs of underserved communities. The National Association of Black Journalists named her Journalist of the Year in 2005. With her leadership, her newsroom won Online Newspaper of the Year by Texas Associated Press Managing Editors in 2019, an International News Media Association Global Media Award in 2018, and Newspaper of the Year by Texas Associated Press Managing Editors in 2013, 2014 and 2016.In her current role, Ms. Alford works to identify and recruit diverse talent, create training and career pathways for existing employees, and manage a fellowship program that hires roughly 45 students a year to work across the organization. Ms. Alford is charged with all significant decisions involving recruitment, development and retention. This includes strategy, workforce development and retention, as well as diversity, equity and inclusion to help the Tribune grow sustainably.She has devoted years of volunteer service on the board of Texas Managing Editors, a nonprofit association of news leaders from across the state that works to foster the highest standards in journalism through professional development and support of student journalists. And she often shares her expertise in journalism and leadership with students and journalists from across the country, including at the University of Texas-Austin and Columbia University in New York and on national conference panels, such as Investigative Reporters and Editors, Maynard 200 and the Journalism & Women Symposium.
