Research Manager Of The Ocean Observation And Ecosystem Group

Trondheim, Trøndelag, Norway

Jan 2021 - Oct 2021

Senior Research Scientist In Environmental Analytical Chemistry

Sintef Ocean

Trndheim, Norway

My research profile includes a strong interest in the environmental fate and effects of a diverse range of pollutant chemicals. My current focus is on the environmental fate and effects of nanomaterials, microplastics and nanoplastics, together with chemicals and materials used CO2 capture. My early career focused on the long-term fate and effects of crude oil pollution in marine environments, and I still have considerable research activity in this field. I am currently coordinating or participating in a range of projects across these research fields. These include fundamental research projects (Norwegian Research Council, EU FP7/H2020) and applied research projects for industry. I have developed a large number of close collaborations with other research institutes, industry and relevant stakeholders, resulting in extensive project management experience and an excellent national and international network.I am the author of over 25 peer-reviewed publications, many in high ranking environmental journals. I have extensive experience of developing new research areas, applying successfully for research funding. I have a strong focus on scientific communication both at the academic level as well as the public level. In recent years, I have been an invited speaker at the United Nations (New York), the European Parliament (Brussels) and the Nordic Council of Ministers (Norwegian Parliament). I have also gained significant experience in Postgraduate teaching through my involvement in the development and implementation of the ‘Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry’ Masters Programme at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). I have co-supervised a number of MSc students and PhD students. I have also participated in 'Science in the Community' activities such as presenting ‘chemistry shows’ for young students (4-16 years). I have also hosted a number of school visits, work experience students and demonstrations at the SINTEF laboratories.

Jan 2017 - Jan 2021

Senior Research Scientist In Environmental Analytical Chemistry

Trondheim, Norway

My research profile includes a strong interest in the environmental fate and effects of a diverse range of pollutant chemicals. My main focus has been on the long-term fate and effects of crude oil pollution in marine environments. I have acquired many years of experience with the analysis of crude oil, and in particular petroleum-derived unresolved complex mixtures (UCMs) of hydrocarbons. Characterisation of the component UCM hydrocarbons has given me a sound background in analytical chemical techniques, including state-of-the-art comprehensive multidimensional gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GCxGC-ToF-MS). Diverse research projects being carried out at SINTEF have given me the opportunity to study the environmental fate and effects of CO2 capture chemicals and nanoparticles. I have worked on both research orientated projects and industry problem solving projects. During my time at SINTEF I have also gained the following relevant experience:• Postgraduate Teaching: I have been actively involved in the development of a new Masters Programme entitled ‘Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry’. This programme will be based at NTNU, Trondheim, Norway and is a collaboration between NTNU, Statoil and SINTEF. As part of my role, I will also contribute a lecture series on gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of crude oil to Masters students.• Science in the Community: I have actively participated in Birralee International School’s Science Fair (November 2008), presenting a ‘chemistry show’ for the students (aged 4-16 years) and discussing their individual science projects. I have also hosted a number of school visits, work experience students and demonstrations at the SINTEF laboratories.

Jan 2007 - Dec 2016

Post Doctoral Research Fellow In Environmental Organic Geochemistry

My research focused on the analysis of petroleum derived unresolved complex mixtures (UCMs) of hydrocarbons extracted from blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) exhibiting impaired health. Characterisation of UCM hydrocarbons was achieved using comprehensive multidimensional gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GCxGC-ToF-MS). During my time at the University of Plymouth I have also gained the following relevant experience:• Postgraduate Lecturing: At the University of Plymouth I contributed a lecture series on oil spills and oil fingerprinting to Environmental Science Masters students.• Consultancy: I have been able to undertake consultancy work at the University of Plymouth, which involved analysis of the organic solvent extractable material from plastic piping. The analytical techniques utilised included IR, GC and GC-MS.• Undergraduate Demonstrator: Whilst completing my PhD I was involved with the supervision of undergraduates in their practical classes. This has also included computer-based modules teaching a range of computer applications students.Furthermore, I have taken an active role in assisting both PhD and undergraduate students with research projects. I have also provided regular GC-MS demonstrations to visiting school children.
