About π¨π»βπ» Andy Budd
Andy is an internationally renowned Design Leader, Speaker, Advisor and Coach. A designer at heart, Andy loves using his knowledge of business, technology and human behaviour to help ambitious leaders build, scale and professionalise their business. As such, Andy is in his element working alongside company founders, board members and their leadership teams.Andy is currently applying his design leadership skills in two areas. First he's working as a Venture Partner at SeedcampβEuropes most successful early stage Venture Fundβhelping to bake an appreciation of design into start-ups from the outset. At the same time he's supporting over a dozen Heads, Directors and VPs of Product and Design as an executive coach and mentor.Andy first came to prominence as an early pioneer of Web Standards, thanks to his hugely popular blog (one of the highest trafficked in the UK at the time), and best selling book, CSS Mastery. Andy then helped popularise the field of UX design, setting up the UKs first dedicated UX agency, along with its first and arguably best UX conference. Andy led Clearleft as Managing Director for 13 years, where he was responsible for setting company vision and strategy, promoting the value of design around the world, and helping leaders at companies like Channel 4, Virgin Holidays and Penguin Books realise their digital potential. Andy was very active in the day-to-day running of the company, setting company strategy, looking after the leadership team and ensuring the happiness and wellbeing of his 30+ staff. He was also responsible for founding two product businesses while he was there, FontDeck and Silverback. Andy has always had a passion for sharing his knowledge, and can regularly be found speaking at international conferences like SXSW, Awwwards and The Next Web. This led Andy to founding dConstruct (the first digital design conference in the UK), UX London (the longest running UX conference in Europe) and Leading Design (a global community of nearly 2,000 design leaders). Andy also co-founded the Brighton Digital Festival, a citywide celebration of digital culture attracting 40,000 visitors and over 190 events. These are just some of the reasons Clearleft has won Netmag Agency of the Year on several occasions, why he was asked to join the Adobe Design Circle, and has appeared on the BIMA100, WIreHive100 and Wired Mag 100 list of the most influential people in tech. Never happier than when he's diving some remote tropical atoll, Andy is a qualified PADI dive instructor, cave diver and retired shark wrangler.
Listed skills include User Experience, Information Architecture, User Interface Design, Interaction Design, and 38 others.

Executive Coach (Product & Design Leadership)
CurrentAndy works two days a week as an executive coach, focussing on supporting design and product leaders. Andy's coaching clients are evenly split between experienced Heads, Directors and VPs leading large (20+) teams and managing other managers; and design leaders in their second or third role looking after smaller (<10 person) teams. The former usually approach Andy in order to help polish their existing leadership skills and hone their personal leadership style; while the latter are generally in the process of developing their leadership styles and looking for help cementing their new practice. If you or anybody you know could benefit from leadership support, please get in touch.
Venture Partner
CurrentAndy is the latest partner at Seedcamp. His role is two fold. First he's involved in assessing potential investment opportunities as part of the fund VI investment team. This means meeting founders to understand their business, reviewing pitch decks and helping to decide which teams we invest in. Once a company joins the Seedcamp portfolio, his job is to provide help and advice to founders as they grown and scale their company from Pre-Seed through to Series A. My areas of focus include company building, team management and culture, product management processes, pricing, product led growth and product market fit.
Expert In Residence
Andy worked for 8 months as an EiR at Seedcamp. During this time he used his network and experience as a founder, design leader and coach, to help Seedcamp portfolio companies scale and professionalise their product design function, their team, and their business as a whole. Andy provided advice to founders, hosted office hours sessions and helped connect Seedcamp to the wider design community. He also spent time with the general partners, sat in on pitches, was party to investment decisions and experienced the inner workings of a successful VC fund. As a result of his EiR work, Andy was asked to join Seedcamp as a Venture Partner.
Founding Member Of The Adobe Design Circle
CurrentTowards the end of 2019, Adobe founded The Adobe Design Circle, a group of 26 influential designers and design leaders interested in advancing the impact design can have on the world. Amongst other things we're responsible for awarding a yearly scholarship of $25k to a group of under represented emerging designers, and supporting those scholars through their educational journey.
Non-Executive Director
While I'm no longer a full time member of the Clearleft team, I still maintain a minority interest in the company. As such I continue to be Board Member and Trustee, providing expert advice, guidance and coaching to my former colleagues.
Founder And Ceo
Towards the end of 2018, I helped transition Clearleft to a new Leadership team, and stepped away from day-to-day management tasks to became company Chairman and CEO. While I still looked after our events operation in the form of UX London and Leading Design, I turned my attention to preparing the company for the move to Employee Ownershipβsomething I was working on for much of 2019 and came to fruition in early 2020. I stayed on to help navigate the company through the choppy waters of the pandemic, before stepping down in March 2021.
Founder And Managing Director
Clearleft were arguably the first User Experience consultancy in the UK, following hot on the heels of agencies like Adaptive Path in the US. We helped define the global practice thanks to our talks, conferences, books, articles and client work β most notably our groundbreaking work for Channel 4, Penguin Books and Virgin Holidays, as well as brands like Tesco, Burberry, and Spotify. Thanks to this we've won numerous awards including being voted agency of the year by .Net magazine on several occasions. As co-founder and Managing Director I grew the company from two to thirty people over a 10 year period, securing tens of millions in revenue along the way. I was responsible for setting company vision and strategy; raising the company profile though media interviews and conference presentations; managing sales and marketing activity; overseeing quality; improving operational efficiency; looking after board level client relations; and recruiting one of the most highly regarded design teams in the business. I was also responsible for new product indicatives, from launching our ground breaking usability testing tool (Silverback) to a host of industry leading conferences and events. In light of the contributions both myself and Clearleft have made to the UK tech industry, I have been featured in both the BIMA 100, WireHive 100 and Wired 100 lists of the most influential people in the UK tech sector.
Founder & Curator
Leading Design is my latest conference, aimed at improving design leadership and management inside both traditional organisations and fast moving tech companies. The conference takes place at the Barbican each October, and sees Heads, Directors and VPs of design travel from as far as Japan, New Zealand and South America to attend this unique event.Past speakers have included Rochelle King (VP of Data, Insights and Design, Spotify), Cap Watkins (VP of Design, Buzzfeed), Mike Davidson (former Vice President of Design, Twitter), Irene Au (Design Partner, Khosla Ventures), Kate Aronowitz (Design Partner, Google Ventures), Adam Cutler (Distinguished Designer IBM), Ben Terrett (Group Design Director, Co-op), Gail Swanson (Director of Strategy, 18F), Stuart Frisby (Director of Design, Booking.com), Stanley Wood (Design Director, Spotify), Kim Lenox (Director of Product Design, Linkedin) and Jens Riegelsberger (UX Director, Google).
Founder & Curator
UX London was Britain's first major user experience event, comprising two days of practical, hands-on workshops, and a day of inspirational speakers. Over the years we've welcomed some of the biggest names in the industry, including Don Norman, Alan Cooper, Bill Buxton and Jared Spool. The aim of this event is to help build the local usability, interaction design and user experience communities in Europe. So our focus is around providing designers the hard skills they need to master the evolving practice if user experience design.
Co-Founder
I co-founders the Brighton Digital Festival in 2011, with our friends at Lighthouse Arts. The goal was to bring the worlds of technology and arts together, acting as a city wide celebration of digital culture. The festival is largely a community run event, supported by The Arts Council. The festival sees over 40,000 people attend 200+ events over the month of September, and is regularly featured by the BBC and Guardian GuideI stepped down from the organising committee in 2016 to focus my attention on Clearleft, but still take a keen interest in event.
Co-Founder
Andy co-founded Fontdeck to help designers have more control over their digital output and improve the standard of web typography for everybody. The start-up was profitable from year one, and helped create a new market for online digital type. We shut the project down in 2016 in order to better focus on our core consultancy business.
Founder
dConstruct was the first digital design conference in the UK, and ran for 10 years. It was an affordable, one-day conference aimed at those responsible for shaping the future of digital technology and culture. Think of it like a British TEDx, before that was a thing.Speakers included prominent authors, academics, futurists, artists, designers and TED alumni from a wide range of organisations, bought together to discuss the challenges and opportunities created by digital technology. Some of my personal favorites included Don Norman, Cory Doctorow, Jared Spool, Aleks Krotoski, Steven B Johnson, Adam Greenfield, James Bridle, Brendan Dawes, James Burke, Lauren Bukes. Ben Hammersley, Adam Buxton, Amber Case, Anab Jain, Warren Elis, Dan Hill and Nick Foster.
Author Of Css Mastery: Advanced Web Standards Solutions
CSS Mastery was one of the first books on the subject of designing with Web Standards. As such many designers and developers cite the book as a pivotal point in their learning journey. The book book was hugely popular at the time, briefly outselling Harry Potter. Now in it's third edition the book has sold nearly a million copies.
