I’m currently in my final 4 months of a 12 year career within the Royal Air Force. I’m serving as an Air Traffic Controller Officer at a busy rotary terminal unit - RAF Shawbury. Previous to this I have operated as an Area Radar Controller at NATS Swanwick and RAF Wittering. I’m actively involved in unit Training, Standards, Assurance and Flight Safety. As a Flight Commander and Deputy Senior Air Traffic Control Officer I hold the responsibility to manage, guide and mentor personnel within the squadron of up to 35 whole force employees. As a Supervisor I ensure the day to day running of the tower, maintaining the highest standard in all that we do, whilst never compromising flight safety. As an Officer I am tasked with events and mission planning, management and execution, project management is an everyday occurrence of which I love.My daily responsibilities include:- Overseeing air traffic control output,- Managing staff and schedules, - Responsible for welfare discipline and career development,- Regular liaision with key station stakeholders and air command,- Providing guidance and support to controllers,- Coordinating with other air traffic facilities,- Handling emergencies and irregular operations,- Managing risk and providing oversight of a multi million pound airfield surfacing programme,- Ensuring compliance with regulations and procedures are adhered to,- Participating and organising training and standards and endorsement checks. - Ensuring a just reporting culture is upheld.Throughout my career I’ve been lucky enough to travel around the world through deployments and representative sport. In 2018 I completed an operational tour as a Weapons Director working with Coalition Forces, providing air power over the Middle East. This was a challenging but a hugely rewarding experience. I was awarded a commendation for my dedication, hard-work and controlling ability whilst deployed. I have over 8 years experience as an Air Traffic Controller, prior to this I spent my time as a Flight Operations Specialist/ Assistant at RAF Cranwell ATC and Station Operations, this was a hugely rewarding and exciting job which exposed me to ATC at the busiest flying station in the RAF, as a result motivated me to become a controller, a career of which I have immense passion and pride in.My spare time consists of spending time and exploring with my 2 young boys and my wife or attempting DIY. As a sports enthusiast you can find me on the golf course in the summer or now watching rugby in the winter, unfortunately my playing days are over.
