Travel Counsellors’ systems are all bespoke written by an internal team of developers, consisting of a browser based booking system accessible to the Travel Counsellors only and not public facing which functions in a similar way to Expedia style system and a back office system for administration and finance purposes used by the staff at the head office in Bolton and other offices around the world. These two core system are supported by a wide range of content apps all integrated into each other and the company intranet. In my role at Travel Counsellors I was initially a form or third level support, however I evolved this into a manager role dealing with bugs and changes in the system. As part of this I would document bugs and tasks and liaise with developers and other project managers across the five development streams within the IT development department. As the manager for “defects” I found it important to speak with all the departments within the company on a regular basis providing updates, training on changes and investigating issues they had with the software that may not have been classed as bugs to help gain an understanding of how the system is used and what improvements the end users wanted or needed making the department of application support a more proactive department and a visible and approachable face to the IT development departmentIn January 2014 the software development teams moved onto a style of management called Scrum which is an agile form of development. As part of this I took on the role of Scrum master for two of the streams, organizing meetings and removing or reporting any impediments that might affect the team and or their productivity with daily meetings and review meetings gathering their feedback and working with them to improve the team’s processes. Due to my knowledge of the end to end system rather than the isolated stream environment I was also able to give valuable insights into how work may affect the user experience
