About Andy Debus
It’s been a couple of years now since I left my freelance pixels behind to fully enter the world of Game Art and Design education. Having settled into teaching, I’ve been looking for a way to use my Game development skills for a different purpose rather than just creating fun experiences.Along with one of my colleagues, Professor Mu, we are investigating ways in which our skills in Machine Learning/AI and Game Art/Design can be used in conjunction with VR to aid the therapy process for Mental Health issues and make it more engaging for patients. We have a couple of prototypes now for different ideas and have had some positive feedback from a small study we conducted with people suffering from different phobias. With almost 30 years under my belt being associated with the Games Industry, I am now following a slightly different path and looking to pass on my knowledge to the next generation of Game Developers. Having been part time for several years, I am now entering my third year as a full time Senior Lecturer teaching Game Art and Design. The first fifteen years of my career were studio based as a Senior/ Lead Artist while the last twelve + have been Freelance, working from home and looking after my two (now teenage) daughters. My previous life before Games was also creative, having worked as a Product Designer and an Illustrator. While in the Industry I have ‘worked on’ (full dev cycle) and ‘contributed to’ over 40 games and apps now, creating 3D and 2D assets using industry standard software and implementing to in-house engines, Unreal and Unity. They have been published on 16 platforms across Console, Mobile, PC and Handheld hardware and have been everything from iconic licences for Lego, SuperCell, Sega and Pixar to new IP’s from micro-Indie studios.
Listed skills include Texturing, Game Development, Video Games, Maya, and 17 others.
