Andrew Garman has devoted his career to development, commercialization and venture capital investment in fundamental information and energy technologies. After twenty years, he recently retired as Founder and Managing Director of New Venture Partners LLC, a venture capital firm specializing in the spinout of corporate technologies, including those from Lucent, British Telecom, IBM, Intel, Philips, and GE. He led fundraising of four funds, totaling over $700M, which invested in over 60 startup companies. Previously, he led or co-led internal venture funds for world renowned laboratories Bell Labs (Lucent) and PARC (Xerox), as well as Bankers Trust. Mr. Garman has served on over 30 boards of directors, including six in England and one in India. They include Vallent Corp. (acquired by IBM), Celiant Corporation (acquired by Andrew Corporation), Lucent Public Safety Systems (acquired by Intrado), Placeware (acquired by Microsoft), InXight Software, Inc. (acquired by Business Objects), SiPort (acquired by Intel), Amati Communications Corp. (acquired by Texas Instruments), dpiX Inc., AcuPrint Inc., Document Forum (acquired by TheLaw.com), Chrystal Software (now Astoria), iBiquity Digital Corporation (acquired by DTS), Azure Solutions Ltd. (acquired by Subex), Psytechnics Ltd. (acquired by NetScout), Vidus Ltd. (acquired by @Road), ICRTec (acquired by Endeavor), and Subex Limited (SUBEX.NS).Mr. Garman began his career as a bench scientist, doing basic, applied, and computational research in alternative energy; combustion and air pollution; and areas related to climate science. He has co-authored numerous technical papers, including a publication in Harvard Business Review, and has presented at countless tech conferences and judged at many venture capital competitions. In addition he was President of the Stanford Business School Alumni Association, served on the boards or advisory councils of the Stanford Business School, Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Purdue University Science and Engineering, the Technology Strategy Committee of the US Council of Competitiveness, and Temple Sinai. Currently based in La Jolla, CA, he is Managing Director of Garman Ventures LLC; is a director of Clics, a salon technology venture; serves on the board of Congregation Beth Israel; and is Chairman of The San Diego Museum of Natural History. He holds an A.B. Engineering and Applied Science from Harvard College, an M.S. Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University, and an M.B.A. (Arjay Miller Scholar) from Stanford University.
