Founder & Cto

Ellipticalcurve

Ellipticalcurve was a technology consultancy I founded in 2013, although I had been consulting for many years prior to that. I advised and consulted for clients on any aspect of digital strategy or digital technology and how it could be used to drive a business forwards. In essence I helped my clients see the future and create a strategy to get there. I am also experienced at managing the development of integrated digital propositions combining mobile, Web or iOT solutions for clients, either for deployment, or in the form of working prototypes or technology demonstrators. I am also experienced in the design & architecting of the back-end systems that all Apps require today. The deliverables ranged from a simple presentation or report, a mockup or prototype, a series of seminars or a working iOS or Android App. My strategy was driven by flexibility and delivering a tailored response to the project and its requirements.I am used to working remotely, and regularly integrate with our clients in-house teams if required. Client projects can span from a few weeks to months. I enjoy helping clients set a course for the future. I'd love to help your business do the same.

Founder & Cto

Onfone

Onfone was a UK based start-up that I founded and was a leading early developer of mobile services specialising in SMS/WAP service development here in the UK. We developed & operated our own highly scalable Linux based back-end server platform and provided both service development & origination together with service delivery and operations for our clients & partners. Our services technology was build on an open source Linux software stack using PHP, Python, Java & C. We were early adopters of Agile development methodologies to manage our dispersed engineering and service hosting development teams. As as founder & CTO I developed much of the core software before we launched with our first customers and I also managed our technology partnerships. I was responsible for successfully building our engineering team and leading the strategic development of our technology platform. I also brought my previous experience of AGILE at GeoWorks to Onfone and I successfully built our team around these methodologies and practices. A significant part of our business was to operate mobile services/Web API's and back-end infrastructure for our clients and partners. Because of this I realised quickly that our Ops team needed to work very closely with our development team and in 2002 I brought both teams together. This AGILE focused combined Dev & Ops team would today be called DevOps.As our technology established itself I switched my focus to building a very successful technology partnership program with key accounts. We also successfully developed a range of Web based tools that our partners could use to provision and manage their services and campaigns and that provided real-time feedback on the responses and interactions with end customers together with other metrics.Onfone and its technology was successfully sold to an Asian investor in 2004.Key clients were; Carphone Warehouse, Umbro Ltd, Sport.com, Halfords Ltd, eBay UK & BT Cellnet (Now O2), Dolphin Telecom (TETRA).

2001 - 2004 ~3 yrs

Team Lead - Mobile Applications And Services

Geoworks Uk

Geoworks was at that time a leading developer of mobile operating systems with its well respected Geos operating system. Geos was used in many products, ranging from the Commodore 64 to the HP Omnigo hand-held pda/communicator and was also chosen by Nokia for its first clamshell Nokia 9000 Communicator GSM phone, which was really the original 'Smartphone'. Geoworks also had a thriving business providing contract development of mobile phones to the Japanese and broader Asian telecom industry, with clients such as NEC, Toshiba, Mitsubishi and Epson. Again these phones had many features that were way ahead of their time.My responsibility was to build and lead a team of in-house mobile services development specialists for products built around the GEOS-SE & GEOS-SC operating systems. Our remit was to work closely with the product development teams to build complimentary services for the hardware projects they were delivering for our clients. We were early adopters of AGILE methodologies and practices and my team especially led the way in this. My team was composed of application software engineers, firmware specialists, UI designers, Interaction designers, graphic designers, hardware engineering and a range of back-end server development engineers. The team was dispersed between the UK, San Francisco and Japan.

Katzmedia Sarl

Katz Media SARL was founded in 1996, with the purpose of manufacturing, distributing and selling multimedia appliances, titles, and services. The company's first product was an Internet enabled STB called Pippin. Katz Media licensed the rights to manufacture and sell products based on the Pippin worldwide from Apple Computer Inc. in the spring of 1996.I built and managed our software engineering team that was based both in the UK & the US. Xpand Inc

I was CTO and I also headed up the development team for our Xpand Xpo virtual trade show technology platform and the scalable back-end production and publishing system. My role also extended to developing and managing our 3rd party technology partnership relationships. The Xpand Xpo technology was an advanced early example of the use of Apple's Quicktime video technology to store over 128 video tracks in a single movie, with each track providing the appropriate visuals for the virtual trade shows 3D environment. My use of multi-track Quicktime video technology in an interactive environment was a breakthrough innovation that enabled the relatively low powered Macintosh & PC's of the day to deliver a fluid and engaging 3D environment. Navigation around the 3D world was implemented using our custom temporal navigation technology. Each Xpand Xpo disc also allowed for vendor content to be located on the disc or out on the Internet, allowing clients to extend the CD-ROM's life with additional interactive content over time. We worked closely with major customers to help them integrate our Xpo publishing technology into their CD-ROM & online marketing activities. Customers included MacWorld/IDG, Excite Inc. I built a strong team of talented software engineers to develop our Quicktime based technology and to integrate it into a unique in-house developed digital publishing platform. Our Xpand Xpo Virtual Trade-show technology provided an innovative 3d interactive environment on a dual platform (MacOS & Windows) CD-ROM that also integrated with Web based content. The Xpo publishing platform and its innovative technology were central to enabling the company to successfully be acquired in a private transaction with a partner.

Associate Director - Digital

London, Gb

Imagination is a fast growing multi-disciplinary design, communications and event company. It's clients range from Ford Motor Company and BT to Apple Inc. At my previous company Herron Associates, Imagination Ltd had been a major client, and in the early summer of 1989 Imagination acquired Herron Associates, just as we were completing the construction of their renowned HQ building in Store Street, London. Together with my father, Ron Herron, I and all of our team joined the company and formed Herron Associates @ Imagination. My father and I worked closely with Imagination founder & Creative Director, Gary Withers. My role was to head up and build a team that would explore the world of digital technology and to build and enhance our capability to deliver digital services of all kinds as part of a broad offering to Imagination's client base. This was a pretty future looking brief for the time and it caused several other competing agencies to start their own efforts in this space. This role was also my first introduction to managing and building a team where eventually a significant element of which were working remotely. My team worked closely with Apple as part its Technology Partnership program, and then later as a client too, when we worked on events & product introductions in the US with our New York team. My team were also involved in major research projects with BT and AT&T that looked at how a future all 'digital' world would impact both the company and the world. Over 3.5 years I built a strong and very talented multi-disciplinary team that supported many major client projects (Bell Labs, AT&T, BT Ford Europe & Apple Inc), and delivered an enormous amount of high technology into the development and operational sides of the company. I was also successful at the early integration of technology with the creative process, and therefore played my part in driving the businesses revenue expansion during the period.

1989 - 1993 ~4 yrs

Visiting Faculty Member

Los Angeles, Ca, Us

Based on the technology in architecture program I had been running at the Architectural Association School of Architecture, as part of Diploma Unit 8, I ran a similar series of lectures and studios at the USC School of Architecture. The program mixed architecture, software design, multi-media content, interactive software and video together and was attended by mixed audience of students from all of these fields. I also brought together USC faculty members from several different disciplines to attend seminars and discussions on collaborative working & technology.

Jan 1991 - Jul 1991

Assistant Unit Master

London, Gb

My focus was on covering the emerging intersection of digital technology with the world of architecture and planning. I tutored students on a 1-to-1 basis and in group tutorial sessions. I also gave a regular lecture series on a range of areas where technology very likely to be changing the world - Silicon technology in chip design, 3D Computer modelling of spaces and environments, Digital communication and its effect on cities & jobs to name a few. I also organised and planned, external courses & activities, to enable our students to meet with key people in the field of technology, and to see technology in action in the real world. In addition we had a strong invited guest lecture series that I curated with guest speakers from organisations such as; Apple UK, Olivetti, Sinclair Research, IBM Research, Intel, Airbus Industrie, BT and Intergraph Corporation.

1985 - 1991 ~6 yrs

Partner

Herron Associates

Herron Associates was a small multi-disciplinary architectural and design consultancy setup by my father.I ran the technology consulting side of the firm, which built on the experience and expertise gained while teaching and carrying out research at the Architectural Association in London. The firm carried out many projects for BT, IBM, IBM Marketing Support, Imagination, The Commonwealth Institute, The Lyric Theatre, The Bubble Theatre Company. We were an early adopter of digitally produced design drawings and project information and were involved in the development of several Applications such as Schema (an architecturally focused 3D modelling system), Infini-D (photo realistic 3D rendering) and Mini-CAD for the Apple Macintosh. We also produced 2D & 3D video animations to help us communicate with clients and also as part of fixed and temporary exhibits incorporated into clients projects. We carried out a number of projects with IBM, culminating in a major exhibit opened by the Queen called 'The Human Story' with Dr Richard Leakey, at the Commonwealth Institute in London. The exhibit featured extensive use of interactive touch-screen displays which were used to explain the story of Human evolution. My team developed the software, hardware and interactive video disc content for the exhibits custom design interactive kiosks.

1985 - 1989 ~4 yrs

Cad Researcher & Development Engineer

London, Gb

I was hired to join the team working on the in-house development of a large networked Intergraph CAD/Modelling system. The Intergraph system was one of the first CAD systems to use bit-mapped raster displays in its custom designed 2-screen workstations. Each workstation was built around a DEC PDP-11 processor board and was networked back to a central DEC VAX 11/750 minicomputer. My experience in writing 3D modelling software and my research into AI driven parametric based design systems at University lead to me being hired to work on various in-house software development efforts. One such project was a design drawing management system that I wrote that provided a visual on-screen UI for the architect at a workstation to select an area of a design project for printing on a large A0 electrostatic printer. By selecting a menu item on a digitising tablet an overlay menu of all the design drawing locations could be displayed and the appropriate drawing selected for printing. Early machine learning techniques were incorporated to enable the system to pro-actively assists the user in whatever they were trying to achieve with the system. This software made printing a new updated drawing about 5-6 times faster and it did not require any knowledge of the specific project or drawing numbering system by the architect. This enabled architects unfamiliar with a project to still produce effective work. This drawing management system was extensively used on projects including the North Terminal at Gatwick Airport.

1983 - 1985 ~2 yrs

Internship With Kenneth Grange

London, Gb

I Interned at Pentagram Design (full disclosure; my father was a partner there at the time) in the Industrial Design team of Kenneth Grange while studying at the Architectural Association. I can honestly say this was a fantastic time for me. I worked in the model shop mostly and learnt an incredible amount about the process of building mock-ups. I also was able to observe how the industrial design process works and loved the incredible tactile nature of that process. Sitting in on design meetings, briefings and participating in client presentations was also an fabulous experience too. Kenneth is both an incredible designer and communicator and I learnt an amazing amount about how to present complex and often arcane ideas.
