Working for the corporate head office of Canada's largest publicly traded construction company, I was part of the formation, development and execution of the ‘Operational Audit Group’ - an initiative to identify and address gaps in operational risk management, preservation of entitlement and project controls (as well as taking a lead role in cost recovery where necessary) across all of Aecon’s various divisions and business units within Ontario, across Canada and overseas.

Mandated to establish a renewable energy division for Canada's largest publicly traded construction company, Andy was instrumental in the birth of Miwel Solar, leading both the Aecon team and our engineering partners. Establishing project controls, processes, roles and responsibilities, staffing and structure of this new division. Together with a team of dedicated professionals Andy successfully ventured forward into this new market sector for the Aecon Group managing the engineering, procurement and construction of 80MW of solar farms across Ontario.

I joined Varcon Construction Corporation to pursue both an exciting challenge and opportunity to take a lead role in developing both the companies' and my own vision for the future.Starting from scratch, I wrote from the ground up an Operations Manual for the company, carried out staff training, implemented project controls and a Project Management reporting system. I Facilitated exponential growth by creating a scalable model, hiring staff and marketing the company across extensive industry contacts. We identified a need to establish three distinct business divisions due to different process requirements: ICI, Infrastructure (Civil) and buildings/design build while tailoring protocols, procedures, project management tools, project controls including financial/forecasting reporting systems to suit each new division. On an ongoing basis I identified and implemented staff changes and further training as necessary in a rigorous pursuit of our objectives. Commercial management included preserving entitlement, managing scope, project rescue and successful delay analysis/claims preparation and rebuttal of spurious claims. Company revenue and margins doubled every year during my tenure leading the team at Varcon.

I was Project Manager on the construction of the Great Wolf Lodge resort, Niagara Falls, Ontario. Ledcor and I both recognized an opportunity to leverage my extensive experience in branded hotel construction and refurbishment throughout the U.K.

Overall responsibility for the company's commercial management and contracting as well as managing our blue chip client, the Whitbread Partnership account with a value of circa. $100M. Implemented rolling refurbishment program of Whitbread’s entire branded hotel estate. This program was continuously improved, culminating in us halving the time taken to refurbish any one hotel, cutting the amount of operatives required despite this, and finally by working with Whitbread to carry out our operations on a “non closure” basis.
