I'm developing ideas for more inclusive decarbonisation and I can help you to do the same. Having advocated for more inclusive services by leading experiential, participative research since 2010, this feels like the most important conversation to be having to progress inclusion right now.I'm an experienced researcher, facilitator, learning designer, project manager and dot joiner. I build networks, spot opportunities, gather information and resources, design methodologies, host conversations and develop creative outputs. I founded Go Upstream in 2017 to highlight the expertise and experience of people who are disabled and disadvantaged when they travel, focussing on the participation of people with dementia. My work doesn’t focus on fixing things, it’s more about building relationships, finding new ways to work together and recognising the value that people can bring to improving design. It aims to bring the right people together to find the best problems to solve in the right order and design more inclusive solutions together.

Chief Imagination OfficerFuture Journeys Observatory Nov 2024 - PresentWe’re redesigning to reduce transport carbon emissions so now’s our chance to reduce inequalities and make travel easier and more inclusive, at the same time. But it’s not happening. And it won’t, unless we intentionally choose, plan and design for it. The Observatory brings together ideas, efforts and research that can start to do that and put some actionable detail behind the warm words of policy. -
AssociateHorizons Research Dec 2023 - PresentCurrently working with the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland on plans for a new space to learn about Scottish heritage. We want to understand how the space and its services can be developed to be as inclusive and welcoming as possible - particularly with people who are disabled and disadvantaged by many destinations and services. -

Director, Go UpstreamGo Upstream Dec 2017 - PresentEdinburghGetting out and about is an important part of everyday life and key to our wellbeing, but journeys are made up of many different experiences and services that could be better designed. Go Upstream brings disabled people, including people with dementia, together with transport operators and other service providers to design more inclusive journeys. We create opportunities and conversations that everyone can contribute to, sharing experiences and learning from each other, providing consultancy and design services and working towards journeys that are inclusive for everyone.By working together we find the best problems to solve and new ways to improve services for everyone. -
Project Lead - UpstreamUpstream Mar 2016 - Dec 2017Getting out and about and continuing to be involved in community life is an important part of living well with dementia. Transport plays a vital role in this but the sensory and cognitive challenges of dementia can make travelling a daunting experience.Supported by the Life Changes Trust, the Upstream project worked with people with dementia across Scotland to discover and share their experiences of travel. Our aim was to discover how to put the voice of people with dementia at the heart of future mobility service design by developing training for mobility service providers and creating spaces for everyone to participate and contribute to the conversation.

Co-Developer / Community Development CoordinatorAliss 2009 - 2014I helped to develop the concept and technology behind ALISS (www.aliss.org) which allows people to collect their own online collection of information about what makes their community strong. By publishing this as open data, ALISS provides new opportunities for improving the local directory model, creating a picture that is powered by local people and enabling new services to be developed that are locally relevant. It also requires new types of local conversations and I've developed different tools and processes that allow people to connect, discover their local community together and use the data gathered to power new local services.
