My role was to drive commercialisation of the world-class research at the Bristol Centre for Synthetic Biology (BrisSynBio). I developed and managed the BrisSynBio Innovations Programme, which led to: 4 major platform patents, five new spinout and startup companies and £4.2M of translational funding. I built a network of industrial collaborators, ran multiple entrepreneurial training programmes and supported the development of a new innovation ecosystem in Bristol and the SW.

As a Knowledge Transfer Manager I was responsible for supporting the growth of UK synthetic biology through targeted networking activities, input into national strategy and by enabling access to public and private funding opportunities. I co-led the Synthetic Biology Special Interest Group and developed a extensive network including key figures from industry, academia and policy making.

Andy worked as a Strategy and Policy Manager at the UK Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and was responsibility for the UK contribution to the Synthetic Biology ERA-NET (ERASynBio). He managed ERASynBio Work Packages 1 (Mapping and Strategy) and 5 (Data and Infrastructure), and leadership of tasks on joint funding calls, and training and education. Outside of the ERA-NET, Andy has contributed to national and international Synthetic Biology policy development at BBSRC including the UK Synthetic Biology Roadmap.

I was responsible for BBSRC's international collaborative schemes, coordinated BBSRC's interaction with South-east Asia and worked on collaborative initiatives with the EU, the US, Brazil, and Japan.
