I prepare individual tax returns for in-person and remote clients. I specialize in investment income, employee stock options, retirement accounts and foreign students studying in the US. I enjoy the challenge of preparing accurate tax returns and helping clients plan so they legally pay no more than the correct amount of tax.

I took a professional sabbatical to hike all 2,198 miles of the Appalachian Trail. It took about 6 months of hiking, with an additional 2 months to recover from an injury I sustained in the White Mountains. It was the most difficult yet rewarding thing I've ever done in my life. I came back with fresh perspectives and a renewed vigor for life. I also met some of the most amazing humans from all walks of life.

I lead a team that builds, deploys and monitors the software that powers infrastructure at Salesforce/Pardot.We helped drive adoption of containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes) and embedded with teams to migrate the main application and several supporting services this new deployment platform. By migrating, we achieved better cost-to-serve, decreased time from commit to deploy, reduced the burden of maintaining and patching long-lived servers, and gave teams better control over how their services run in production.We built internal tooling to support internal security controls and compliance efforts (SOC-2, SOX). We built software to ensure relevant code owners reviewed code destined for production, while remaining as unobtrusive as possible to deploy velocity. We modernized our internal authentication and authorization systems, based on OpenID Connect, to ensure employees are able to easily request and maintain access to the systems they need, while also maintaining a high level of security and trust.We developed a service to modernize and centralize the encryption and decryption of sensitive data. The service exposes a simple API to consumers, but is backed by industry-standard encryption and cloud-based key management. The service simplified encryption for our applications while providing a centralized place to review and audit.

I was a member of the Runtime Infrastructure team at Heroku, responsible for the software and tools that drive the Heroku platform, at the time deployed across many AWS regions and tens of thousands of nodes. We developed the software that scaled, monitored and deployed both internal and customer applications and code. As part of a smaller, cross-functional team, I built a feature that allowed customers to connect their on-premise or other cloud infrastructure to a Heroku Private Space using a VPN.

I was a member of the SRE team, responsible for the reliability of the DigitalOcean cloud, at the time deployed across nine data centers and tens of thousands of nodes. We were responsible for the configuration management of our hypervisors and other servers, and for helping developers deploy their applications to production. As part of a smaller cross-functional team, I built a centralized logging system that ingested a high volume of logs (using the ELK stack with custom glue where appropriate).

I was a member of a software team responsible for an analytics pipeline at GitHub. We built and maintained infrastructure to collect, warehouse and report on how GitHub users interacted with our services. We built features both for internal use (e.g., for security and compliance) and customer use (e.g., repository traffic graphs).

As a consultant, I helped companies build, deploy and operate web-based applications. While I generally built applications using Ruby on Rails, some of my larger projects involved many different kinds of backend technologies, languages, frameworks, databases and deployment strategies.
