The Director of the Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) is responsible for the efficient and effective accomplishment of the overall U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) mission as an ERDC Corporate Officer and member of the ERDC Board of Directors as well as the specific mission of CERL. CERL is comprised of a highly interdisciplinary workforce of about 220 Federal employees and 80 contract personnel with an annual operating budget in excess of $80M. The role of the Director includes leadership of basic and applied research, development, and engineering programs related to the building and construction sciences and environmental quality sciences applicable to the acquisition, modernization, operation, maintenance, repair and refurbishment of the Army's physical plant including its training areas. Support activities include the full spectrum of installation support and include both in-house assets and support from academia, industry, and professional organizations.

The Technical Director for Infrastructure Science & Engineering, at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL), plans and develops the highly interdisciplinary theoretical, applied science, and engineering research portfolio that comprises the CERL research program focused on fixed facilities and installations. This program focuses on improving the durability, resilience and sustainability of Military and Civil Works facilities and infrastructure, provides integrated solutions for facility and installation energy conservation, efficiency and distribution, and develops solutions for life-cycle installation management. The Technical Director leads new areas of research in support of Army and DoD Science and Technology priorities, working closely with other leading global research organizations.

The Engineer Research and Development Center International Research Office (ERDC-IRO) is the focal point for ERDC international science and technology engagement. ERDC-IRO promotes cooperation with the international research community as a means to advance science and engineering knowledge and technical capabilities in areas relevant to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) through establishment of cooperative agreements, personnel and technical exchanges, teaming development, and other networking activity. The IRO is responsible for establishing links to international research and development efforts that can add value to the research programs within each of the ERDC business areas: - Geospatial Research and Engineering - Military Engineering - Environmental Quality and Installations - Water Resources - Engineered Resilient SystemsThe ERDC IRO maintains a close collaboration with other DoD Research and Development Liaison offices, include the European Office of Aerospace Research and Development (EOARD), the Office of Naval Research - Global (ONR-G), and the US Army International Technology Center - Atlantic (USAITC-A).

First line supervisor for a multi-disciplinary research team of about 35 engineers and scientists. Responsible for technical and budgetary oversight of branch research, marketing and development of new strategic technical research areas, and management of all branch resources including equipment, personnel, and laboratories.The Energy Branch portfolio includes research and development in the following areas:• Automated additive construction technology• Computational models and analysis tools for sustainable community master planning• Improved energy efficiency and reduced construction logistics for contingency structures using automated construction methods• Installation and tactical micro grid systems for improved energy security and logistics management• Demonstration, measurement, and validation of new energy efficient technologies• Support to DoD installations to achieve energy, water, and waste efficiency goals• Guide specifications for building energy efficiency and industrial control systems (including cyber-security)• Modeling and simulation for climate change adaptation
