Breakthrough is now active in every US state, and is solving interesting problems around secure online video, protecting private and sensitive health information, and most of all, making it easy for people who need help to get it. Breakthrough was acquired by MDLIVE, which became part of Aetna Insurance in 2021.■ Led software development of entire online system, from therapist search and user registration to online scheduling and secure two-way videoconferencing.■ As architect, made major decisions on tools and platforms: Ruby on Rails / Javascript+jQuery+ Coffeescript / Redis / MySQL on HIPAA-compliant hosted environment; VSee and Adobe Connect video platforms.■ Managed development of apps for iOS and Android.■ Hired engineering team, located in-office and remotely in Michigan and India. Within a year of launching, DogTime.com was the premier online destination for dogs and their people, with extensive information, community, and online services. It is the hub site of the DogTime Media Network, which allows 100 pet-related Web sites, from tiny to very large, to bundle ad inventory, share content, and more.I was first hire and founding engineer, leading all technical aspects of turning an overall vision into the working DogTime platform.■ Made all platform decisions; hired technical staff; designed system architecture. Core system is built in Ruby on Rails on Unix, with a body of services available via Web, XML services, and email.■ Maintained philosophy of open-source standards, RESTful protocols, agile design. Outsourced or used third-party software for features, when appropriate and separation was well-defined.■ Part of creative roundtable--with editorial, design, and business development leads--to develop feature concepts, design user experience, and build DogTime services and content.■ Released Version 1.0 in five months with a team of 2 1/2 programmers; managed technical staff, projects, bug and feature lists. A family-oriented city guide, launched in three U.S. cities and now covering the entire US. In late 2005, just before we won the Webby award for "Family / Parenting"​, Parents Connect (originally GoCityKids) was acquired by Viacom and is now managed with Nickelodeon and their other Kids & Family brands.I was founding engineer (and entire technical staf) in our first years. I structured the site on a content-creation system designed to let our writers work from their homes nationwide. Writers use a Web-based authoring system to create objects ranging from activity writeups to new content categories.Designed and programmed the entire Web site, on Java / JSP / MySQL / Linux. Public features include: extensive listings by neighborhood and category, weekly newsletter of family activities for the upcoming weekend, online coupons and corresponding "Deals & Steals"​ newsletter, calendar of events, reader comments, "add an activity" feature.Content is managed through an authoring back-end that allows editorial staff to easily create new attraction and event writeups, categorize content, review reader submissions, and manage subscriptions.

Kodak's online digital-photography processing service is the industry leader, storing more than one petabyte (one billion megabytes) of customer photos and processing tens of thousands of orders daily for prints, enlargements, custom books, calendars, and gifts.As a Senior Engineer with the Lab Group, my focus was on the back-end software that routes orders to Kodak's labs, produces photo products, and communicates order status to the user site. I designed and programmed new features, acted as technical liason for outsourced projects, and interim-managed the programming team.

BabyCenter is now a Johnson & Johnson company. BabyCenter won Webby awards in each of the two years I was there.Worked closely with editor, designer, producer, and CEO to map out and implement the complete user experience. Designed system architecture, selected hardware and software platforms. Original "working prototype" system was built on Unix in server-side JavaScript with Informix; final system is Java and ATG Dynamo running with Oracle on an array of load-balanced Suns.Managed programming projects, hired technical team. Starting with no technical staff, managed the completion of a full-featured "working prototype" system, delivering it on time 16 weeks after I was hired. Staffed and managed HTML team; trained in advanced features.Designed site architecture to support easy control over all content by the editorial staff. Staffers create, modify, and edit content elements such as news stories, in-depth articles, and opinion polls, via a Web-based back end. Pages are published and links are updated as content is approved. The original site served as a working prototype, and the original architecture was continued in the more scalable Java-based system that is still used.Managed continuing development and transition to Java-based system, including integrated online store, further content-based features, and advanced back-end reporting.
