>>This is a story about luck and loveIn 1989, I was hired off an improv stage to be a copywriter. No resume, no portfolio, no training. It was the last time I ever interviewed for a job. One of my first campaigns made the cover of AdWeek (never heard of it). Through a headhunter (never heard of ‘em), I landed in Detroit. My boss was iconic Madman Harvey Gabor, the McCann art director on Coca-Cola’s legendary “Hilltop” spot. I sure knew what that was. What started as a job instantly became a career. I was lucky-in-love, and I fell hard. My time with Harvey, and through thousands of improv, sketch comedy and rock band shows I learned something big: hard work from tight teams focused on excellence can immediately transform people. I just knew if I worked like crazy with great teams, great things would happen. Bringing team-power to my job for 34 years is one of the things I heart-emoji the most. >>This is the “I can do that!” chapterMaybe DNA is a big character in this story - my Mom’s Dad owned a Madison Avenue agency in the 1930’s and 40’s. But after repeatedly seeing the best owners I worked for make teams great, and love it like me. I thought, “I can do that!” So after four agencies as a writer and creative director, I bought the ad agency where I started my career.Now I’m President of a company I love, and am lucky to have insanely talented and smart co-owners and managers. Most of us have been teammates for almost 20 years, and they’re what makes us exceptional. >>This is the exceptional chapterProud as I am, objectively, our team is exceptional. What have we done? Became one of the most experienced behavior change marketing companies in the country. Tackled some of society’s biggest public health and higher ed challenges. Almost doubled since 2000.Became majority woman-owned.Got named one of Inc. Magazine’s fastest growing 5000 companies in the US. Built a culture with almost no turnover.>My focus now? Helping our creative teams improve lives through communications, and leading our culture team to connect and inspire our people. And I’m still in love. (Luck and love are are part of my story. But the very top of my luck/love list is held by my incredible wife and three daughters.
