Serving as a member of the Territorial Army during my gap year and at university was a defining period in my life, and shaped who I am today. I was lucky to be part of a unit that prided its self on physical and mental strength and professionalism in everything you did. Being part of this instilled taking responsibility for actions, being self-reliant, persevering, and how to be calm and decisive in stressful situations. It also taught me how to work with others in close teams in the most demanding environments.The highlight of my Army career was a secondment to the regular army for jungle training in Central America. I was the only reserve forces soldier in my unit and had to prove myself to the regular soldiers who were suspicious of "part-timers". It was a physically and mentally tough course, living in the jungle with no support from the outside world, every action you make is there for all to see. Success for me was being accepted into my section of 8 - at the end of the course two people had to stay behind to guard a position for an extra day and night. Being the part-timer i was immediately nominated for the job. My section stood up for me them saying I was alright, and the job was passed on. At the same time my commanding officer of my platoon took me one side and commended my attitude and said there if I ever wanted a job I would be welcome in his company.
