I am a design engineer with an affinity for data science, a love for sewing and pattern drafting, and an interest in global health and engineering education. I've designed and manufactured wearable technologies with best-in-class brain-sensing capabilities for mass markets. I've incorporated textile-based sensors in high-sensitivity bio-signal processing applications. I've designed and fabricated custom assistive technologies in clinical environments. Over the course of years, I've taught aspects of engineering to nearly 800 early and upper-year university students, both in Canada and in developing nations. My PhD is in biomedical engineering, but that's just one chapter in this story.

Data Science FellowInsight Data Science May 2020 - Sep 2020Toronto, Ontario, CanadaInsight is a competitive post-doctoral training fellowship designed to bridge the gap between academia and data science.• Developed a web app powered by Python and Flask to guide college and university graduates through difficult career transitions, emphasizing unique talent combinations.• Implemented a topic-modeling algorithm to surface uncommon career paths based on similarities in duties and skills to common paths, and to guide the user through the development of missing skills. -
Hardware ResearcherMuse ™ | The Brain Sensing Headband By Interaxon Aug 2018 - Apr 2020Toronto, OntarioMakers of the Muse meditation headband—best-in-class brain sensing technology embedded in consumer wearable devices.• Recognizing a gap between consumer demand for high-quality, comfortable sleep technologies and today's state-of-the-art, I worked with a small team to design, prototype, and manufacture a soft-material reinvention of the Muse headband, which launched as Muse S in 01/2020. The rapid, successful development of this product demanded interdisciplinary expertise to reach solutions in soft material-electronics integration, pattern drafting, industrial sewing, and manufacturing process development. • To ensure laboratory-quality capture of difficult-to-acquire brain signals (with their small signal-to-noise ratio), I facilitated direct and continuous collaboration with our algorithm research team to drive hardware design.

Visiting Endeavour Fellow In Biomedical EngineeringFlinders University Feb 2018 - Jun 2018Adelaide, AustraliaEndeavour research fellowships are awarded by the Australian government to fund high-impact, short-term international research collaborations. • Observing a void of comfortable solutions for preventing positional sleep apnoea events, I designed and prototyped a wearable device that combines inertial measurement and audio analysis to detect apnoea events and prompt position shifts in at-risk adults.• Separately, to validate the accuracy and clinical robustness of a novel, inexpensive sensor for kinematic measurement during gait, I developed and validated an algorithm to assess knee angle estimation error.

Phd CandidateUniversity Of Toronto Sep 2012 - Jan 2018Toronto, OnThe PRISM Lab specializes in developing custom assistive technologies to fill gaps between what exists and what is needed for a child to engage with their world.• To enhance communication opportunities for children with unique physical and postural constraints, I designed, fabricated, and tested a headband in-clinic that incorporates fabric electrodes to allow non-verbal youth to communicate using eye blinks.• Recognizing a need for portable solutions to monitor brain activity, I engineered textile-based electrodes to measure brain activity and to differentiate brain states in healthy adults. -
Teaching AssistantUniversity Of Toronto Sep 2012 - Dec 2017Toronto, OnEngineering Strategies and Practice is U of T’s largest engineering course, with first-year students in all disciplines taking part (~1000 per session).• To bridge the gap between technical knowledge and the execution of real-world engineering projects, I guided an annual cohort of ~60 engineering students through client-serving design projects, teaching the fundamentals of engineering design, project management, and technical communication.
