About Amanda N. Fleury, Phd

I am a design engineer with an affinity for data science, a love for sewing and pattern drafting, and an interest in global health and engineering education. I've designed and manufactured wearable technologies with best-in-class brain-sensing capabilities for mass markets. I've incorporated textile-based sensors in high-sensitivity bio-signal processing applications. I've designed and fabricated custom assistive technologies in clinical environments. Over the course of years, I've taught aspects of engineering to nearly 800 early and upper-year university students, both in Canada and in developing nations. My PhD is in biomedical engineering, but that's just one chapter in this story.

Amanda N. Fleury, Phd Work Experience Details
  • Sheertex
    Senior Data Scientist
    Sheertex Jan 2021 - Present
  • Insight Data Science
    Data Science Fellow
Insight Data Science May 2020 - Sep 2020
    Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Insight is a competitive post-doctoral training fellowship designed to bridge the gap between academia and data science.• Developed a web app powered by Python and Flask to guide college and university graduates through difficult career transitions, emphasizing unique talent combinations.• Implemented a topic-modeling algorithm to surface uncommon career paths based on similarities in duties and skills to common paths, and to guide the user through the development of missing skills.
  • Muse ™ | The Brain Sensing Headband By Interaxon
    Hardware Researcher
Muse ™ | The Brain Sensing Headband By Interaxon Aug 2018 - Apr 2020
    Toronto, Ontario
Makers of the Muse meditation headband—best-in-class brain sensing technology embedded in consumer wearable devices.• Recognizing a gap between consumer demand for high-quality, comfortable sleep technologies and today's state-of-the-art, I worked with a small team to design, prototype, and manufacture a soft-material reinvention of the Muse headband, which launched as Muse S in 01/2020. The rapid, successful development of this product demanded interdisciplinary expertise to reach solutions in soft material-electronics integration, pattern drafting, industrial sewing, and manufacturing process development. • To ensure laboratory-quality capture of difficult-to-acquire brain signals (with their small signal-to-noise ratio), I facilitated direct and continuous collaboration with our algorithm research team to drive hardware design.
  • Flinders University
Visiting Endeavour Fellow In Biomedical Engineering
    Flinders University Feb 2018 - Jun 2018
    Adelaide, Australia
Endeavour research fellowships are awarded by the Australian government to fund high-impact, short-term international research collaborations. • Observing a void of comfortable solutions for preventing positional sleep apnoea events, I designed and prototyped a wearable device that combines inertial measurement and audio analysis to detect apnoea events and prompt position shifts in at-risk adults.• Separately, to validate the accuracy and clinical robustness of a novel, inexpensive sensor for kinematic measurement during gait, I developed and validated an algorithm to assess knee angle estimation error.
  • University Of Toronto
    Phd Candidate
University Of Toronto Sep 2012 - Jan 2018
    Toronto, On
The PRISM Lab specializes in developing custom assistive technologies to fill gaps between what exists and what is needed for a child to engage with their world.• To enhance communication opportunities for children with unique physical and postural constraints, I designed, fabricated, and tested a headband in-clinic that incorporates fabric electrodes to allow non-verbal youth to communicate using eye blinks.• Recognizing a need for portable solutions to monitor brain activity, I engineered textile-based electrodes to measure brain activity and to differentiate brain states in healthy adults.
  • University Of Toronto
    Teaching Assistant
University Of Toronto Sep 2012 - Dec 2017
    Toronto, On
Engineering Strategies and Practice is U of T’s largest engineering course, with first-year students in all disciplines taking part (~1000 per session).• To bridge the gap between technical knowledge and the execution of real-world engineering projects, I guided an annual cohort of ~60 engineering students through client-serving design projects, teaching the fundamentals of engineering design, project management, and technical communication.
  • Jimma University
    Assistant Professor, Biomedical Engineering
    Jimma University Sep 2014 - Aug 2015
    Jimma, Ethiopia
A United Nations-funded teaching fellowship developed by Rice University (Texas, USA) to enhance undergraduate and graduate-level education in biomedical engineering, driving the sustainable development of in-country expertise to support Ethiopia’s rapidly expanding medical infrastructure.• To support the launch of Jimma’s new biomedical engineering department and to establish local expertise, I developed curricula for and instructed three upper-year engineering courses while concurrently training local instructors on teaching methods that incorporate hands-on design and experiential learning.
  • Holland Bloorview
    Masc Candidate
    Holland Bloorview Sep 2009 - Jul 2011
    Toronto, On
Masters student in Biomedical Engineering at U of T working in the Bloorview Research Institute
  • University Of Toronto
    Teaching Assistant
University Of Toronto Jan 2011 - Apr 2011
    Toronto, On
Managed tutorial session for a first year design course. Delivered practical lectures in seminars, confidently addressing questions and concerns.
  • Capital Medical University
    Research Intern
Capital Medical University Sep 2010 - Nov 2010
    Beijing, China
Participated in lab work analyzing ocular pressure in rabbits. Assisted in research and lab work related to the the modeling of ankle bone and joint mechanics to predict fracture patterns. Aided in translation of several papers and presentations.
  • University Of Toronto
