Dr. Andrés C. García Montero holds a degree in Biology (1992) from the University of Salamanca (USAL) and obtained his PhD Degree in 1997 at the same university. He spent a two years stage (1998-2000) at the Unité 315 (currently UMR1068; “Centre de Cancérologie de Marseille”) of Institut National de la Santé et la Research Medicale (INSERM, Marseille, France) and then returned to work at the Cancer Research Center of Salamanca (IBMCC, USAL-CSIC). Today he is tenured R3 Researcher at the Biomedical Research Institute of Salamanca (IBSAL-ISCIII), Assistant Professor at the Department of Medicine, Technical Coordinator of the Spanish National DNA Bank Carlos III (BNADN, USAL), the current Director of NUCLEUS (Platform of Research Support Services of the USAL; https://nucleus.usal.es/) and, from September 2014, chair member of the Ethics Research Committee of the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII). He is integrated (since 2000) at a research group (recognized as a Consolidated Research Unit by the Regional Government of Castile and Leon) ascribed to the IBMCC and IBSAL. A part from his expertise in biobanking, his current research line is focused in the phenotypic and molecular characterization of Systemic Mastocytosis, an orphan disease in which neoplastic mast cells could play an immunomodulatory role over other cell types of the innate and/or adaptive immune responses of the patients affecting cell microenvironment and disease progression. As principal investigator he has obtained competitive grants continuously from 2006 to now (n=16). As Technical Coordinator of the BNADN biobank he has collaborated within the Spanish Biobanking Research Network, the Platform for Biomolecular and Bioinformatics Resources, the Spanish Biobank Platform and nowadays within the Platform for Biobanks and Biomodels (PT20/00085). In fact, during the last 19 years, the BNADN biobank has distributed >150.000 biological samples from patients and healthy donors (supporting >350 research projects). Also, to be highlighted his participation within the international 1000 genomes project (www.1000genomes.org), allowing the inclusion of the Spanish genome (IBS population) within the 26 populations worldwide-selected to generate the reference map of genomic variability of the human genome (Nature 2012; Science 2013; Nature Commun. 2015; Nature 2015). During the COVID19 pandemia he also coordinated the RT qPCR-based diagnostic facility for SARS-CoV2 of the USAL, to support the Regional Health System of Castile and Leon.
