Research and develop submarine, surface ship, and surveillance sonar systems.Implement the Sonar Tactical Decision Aid (STDA) which helps sailors better utilize their sonars based on the current ocean environment. STDA runs on all submarines and surface ships in the US fleet, as well as at numerous surveillance locations. Development includes creating user interfaces to display complex, high-dimensional sonar data; programming back-end processing of real-time sonar data; implementing math and physics related to the sonar equation; and interfacing with other software segments running on the ship. Awarded IR&D funding to apply data mining techniques to sonar data in order to classify acoustic tracks using machine learning.

Taught Intro to MySQL (ITSE 1303), which covers fundamentals of the relational database, database design, and the SQL language, using MySQL.

Created applications for submarine sonar systems, submarine periscope systems, unmanned underwater vehicles, surface ship communications systems, hand-held command and control devices, first-responder situational awareness systems, and radio communications modeling and planning tools.

Taught Introduction To Computing (CSC 110), which covered introductory Java programming, and an intro to Microsoft databases, advanced spreadsheet functionality, and advanced MS Word functionality.

Used Genetic Programming in C++ to model a set of coupled ordinary differential equations. Solving these equations allowed NASA scientists to model the relationship between phytoplankton and zooplankton in the Chesapeake Bay. These two organisms are critical to the marine ecosystem, and their populations can influence the amount of CO2 in the ocean and in the atmosphere.
