About Angela Clark

I am an award-winning, leading forensic anthropologist based in New Zealand. With over 17 years of work experience in forensic anthropology and bioarchaeology, working with Police, archaeologists, iwi, and legal professionals in the investigation of human skeletal remains. I prepare detailed peer-reviewed reports for cases with forensic or historic importance for various clients, communities and quality scientific journals, and frequently called to present expert testimony in criminal trials. I've held various teaching and research roles at the University, and am now employed part-time, as a permanent Lecturer in Forensic Science. I run the highly popular summer school, FORB 201, Forensic Biology at the University of Otago, teach into postgraduate Forensic Science, offer teaching opportunities to Dental Students in Forensic Human Identification methods, and supervise postgraduate projects in forensic anthropological and odontological research topics. My research approach is distinctly humanistic and socially conscious, grounded in forensic science yet embracing a holistic perspective. A large portion my work focuses on working alongside Māori partners using a Kaupapa Māori approach to contribute meaningfully to a transformative criminal justice system. My current research projects include; examining signs of trauma, disease, and stress on the bones and teeth, heat-induced changes in the teeth, the accuracy and validity of printing human material as evidence in court to explain the circumstances around death, and the mātauranga Māori of the digitisation of kōiwi tangata in criminal courts. My research interests also expand to include the media’s portrayal of forensic science, and how this affects the way forensic science is taught and understood. As the current President of the New Zealand International Science Festival, I am a passionate advocate for STEM, particularly for women and girls, through the creation and engagement of outreach opportunities within the wider community. I am a Member of the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences, and the New Zealand representative on the Forensic Anthropology Technical Advisory Group for ANZPAA and ANZFEC NIFS. I am the Chairperson of the Ōtepoti Dunedin subbranch of the Australian and New Zealand Forensic Science Society, a council member and current co-treasurer for NZFSS. I am the Presiding member of the Rudolf Steiner School Board in Ōtepoti Dunedin. And, I also run a company, The Science of Crime, offering forensic science outreach events and workshops, for children, schools, families and adults.
